Obama says back off the kids, that's good enough for me
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/09/01/1321281.aspx
In his media avail, Obama just responded to reporters' questions about the Bristol Palin story. Noting that his mother had him when she was 18 years old, Obama said families are "off limits" in campaigns. He was very impassioned.

"I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories," Obama said. "And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know, my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics, and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits."

Regarding to the accusation from the McCain camp that rumors of Bristol Palin were being spread by liberal bloggers, some with connections to the Obama campaign, the Illinois senator replied: "I am offended by that statement.Tthere is no evidence at all that any of this involved us. I hope I am as clear as I can be. So in case I am not, let me repeat: We don’t go after people’s families; we don’t get them involved in the politics. It is not appropriate and it is not relevant. Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be. And if I ever thought it was somebody in the campaign that was involved in something like that they would be fired."

16. That's exactly right
All too many Democrats would rather people thought that they were "nice" and "above all that" than do what it takes to win.

Professor Lakoff:

and Professor Westen:

Have shown us how to handle this. Will the campaign, its surrogates and supporters listen?

26. That's exactly wrong

it's not about Democrats and Republicans, it's not about being "above all that" or being "nice".

It's about right and wrong. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it. When we're willing to be scum to beat scum there's nothing left worth winning. Obama is right.

You're prepared to lose and don't care who you hurt with your self-infulgence.

Democrats who think like that have cost us ENOUGH already.

37. Others here support a permutation of Bush's "to beat a terrorist, you have to
become a terrorist." They go with "to beat a repub, you have to become a repub."

I hope that once we win, they can go back to being "Democrats" and won't feel the need to go on being "repubs" because it is so "effective".

3. I agree
We either are on board with what Obama stands for, change with integrity, or we play dirty with people on the other side who are more used to it and probably do it better. We can't expect to win a mud wrestling contest with a pig, so why get our clothes dirty. As usual, Obama takes a principled stand that will hopefully effect good in this campaign and those to come.

What is wrong with all of the posters at DU who keep going after Palin's family? Is it because they are too intellectually lazy to enunciate opposition to Palin based upon her stands on the issues?

We are dangerously close to having yet another raving lunatic with his finger on the button. How many times are we going to dodge that bullet? McCain picked her.

If Chelsea had been pregnant out of wedlock, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Coulter, Tom Delay, would have sliced her to fucking ribbons and fed the scraps to the dogs on the Capitol steps.

22. Yes, let's focus on Todd Palin instead
the media have been all over Michelle Obams and Cindy McCain: when do we get to know more about Mr. Palin? What does he do for a living? Does he help raise the children while his wife's in Juneau? Has he ever been a militant Black Muslim?

Surely he and Sarah have discussed this important step: let's get him on TV and hear him talk!

I'll bring the popcorn.

If he says don’t go there, I agree. We don’t have to go there. Sarah Palin has a wasps nest of problems, her teenage daughter’s pregnancy may represent the hypocrisy of the RW and all that is wrong with the idea of no sex and no sex education, but it is no where near what is wrong with McInsane’s selection for VP.

34. I have no problem with Bristol Palin.
Her mom is a very stupid woman, a hypocrite, and a fundamentalist lunatic who wants to impose her failed family values on the rest of us. McCain's dangerous choice of a running mate is evidence that he is mentally unfit to serve.

Thank you for your concern on this important matter.

44. I was at a friend's kid's b-day party yesterday,
a big BBQ. Guess what topic came up? The repukes having a female for VP. Guess what else came up? The "you won't believe the sleaze coming from the left on the internet forums," followed by hashing and rehashing and explaining to folks who hadn't heard anything about it.

Some of you may say this is OK to bring up, to plant the idea in people's heads that Gov. Palin is a hypocrite, or that we've got to play dirty just like the repukes do. Maybe we do, what do I know?

I'm just going to say that I was very, very embarrassed yesterday.
