GOP platform breaks with McCain on abortion rights

By GLEN JOHNSON – 3 hours ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Republican National Convention delegates have adopted a platform that is at odds with certain nominee John McCain on abortion rights.

The nonbinding document calls for an outright ban on abortion. It doesn't include exceptions allowing abortion in cases of rape, incest or where a mother's life would be in danger. Those exceptions all are favored by McCain.

The platform approved during Monday's truncated opening convention session also highlights a difference between McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. She opposes abortion in all cases.

Convention delegates also adopted a rule Monday to keep the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary at the front of their presidential nominating calendar.

END OF ARTICLE

This is good. We need to pound on this. Don't say "they want to overturn Roe v. Wade," say "They want to OUTLAW ALL ABORTIONS EVEN FOR RAPE AND INCEST."

This is what Sarah Palin is all about. Don't let them talk about how PREGNANCY IS A PRIVATE MATER.

3. My only question is:
does it solidify their voting base???

If it does, then it hurts us, and it just means that we have to work harder. This election is as much about ideology as it is about the candidates.

7. I don't think there's one base anymore.
It solidifies the fundies. It probably turns off the rank and file fiscal conservatives. They don't really give a damn about abortion, they just play along to keep the fundies voting for them.

10. In my area (SE PA) a lot of older Republicans are pro-choice.

They support Planned Parenthood, and they vote for Arlen Specter partly because of his support on the issue. It's only in very recent years that the local Rep party has been taken over by rabid "pro-lifers." The old-school republicans are appalled. I think choice could end up being a defining issue for some of these Republicans, and they do vote.

11. Are you serious?! that's completely daft.
I can't believe this. Their base is dwindling every day, so energizing the base alone won't work if the base shrinks enough. THEY are the ones who needed to run to the center to attract the undecideds. I mean... we're pretty frakin' energized ourselves, and there are more of us now - they'll still lose!

Although if they're serious about this, you know, we have a serious, serious problem on our hands if they somehow do prevail. They shouldn't, knock on wood, but still...
