ABC News Confirms Palin's Membership in Secessionist AIP - this is huge
It's gone mainstream almost!

We also learn that not only was Palin a member, but she and her husband attended the group's 1994 convention.

It's unclear how much Palin's involvement with the AIP has influenced her political philosophy today. Now a member of the Republican party, does she still, as the Vice Chairman of the AIP put it, "pretty well sympathetic to her former membership"?

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/1/193111/4427/159/582600

the article from ABC:

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

2. So will they come out and say the McCain knew about this little snafu as well?
Just wondering how the McFailure campaign would spin this little gem.

3. FOURTEEN YEARS AGO?????????
Gee... about 4 years after Michelle Obama stopped being a militant college student. (Yes, she really was. But it was 20 years ago. Does it REALLY matter???)

Sometime around the same time that Todd Palin got that DUI arrest.

Y'all are going way too far back. If it didn't happen this century, I don't consider it relevant. And that includes McCain's adultery and his divorce. It's just too long ago.

6. It may matter...
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 08:33 PM by regnaD kciN
...because she was an elected public official (as the McCainiacs never cease to remind us) at that time.

ON EDIT: I think it depends a lot upon the AIP's nature. Further on down the thread I mention my ties to the Cascadian National Party. In the case of the CNP, their goals were to ask the state governments of Oregon and Washington to start taking steps to request independence from the U.S. for the purpose of forming the Republic of Cascadia. If, OTOH, the goals of the AIP were to secede by force of arms -- and, above all, if they advocated forming a paramilitary force for that purpose -- it might be a very serious matter. In any event, it will probably be difficult for some people to see Sarah Palin as an "American patriot" if she used to advocate secession from the U.S.A.

Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 08:33 PM by IWantAnyDem
So no, it's not going too far back.

And for the record, Michelle Obama was a student in the 80's. Palin was an actual member of a radical political party that advocates secession until she ran for mayor of Wallisa.

17. Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the AIP?
What's sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander. Sure, it is a fair issue to raise, and it may explain why that drama queen Sarah went to such extremes to ensure the baby was natural born in Alaska.

35. Actually, it does matter
Alaska's former Governor, also an AIP member and elected on the AIP platform endorsed her for her 2006 Governor's Race and claims he "gave her the election." So YES, it does matter.

11. There was a quote from her recently
(and I can only barely paraphrase, apologies) to the effect that she wanted to be VP to do good things for Alaska. As if as VP her chief concern would be AK.

I found that ignorant and disquieting, myself.

After all this time, some Democrats just don't take Neocons and Fundamentalists seriously as the rabidly insane threat that they are.

Hitler and the Nazis were called "buffoons" by the Weimar leadership until their laughter backfired.

Enjoy the snark while it lasts.

I don't see how she can possibly drop out. Sorry, the show is on and the GOPers are stuck with her, for better or for worse.

He gave her the nod after meeting her only once?

Party suicide.

41. I agree with you that she's pathetic. But everyone's overlooking her redneck cred.
Among the Neocon "base" -- a political term which coincidentally continues to make me think about the origin of the term "Al Qaeda" which literally means "The Base" -- among these rabid rednecks who control a portion of our political electorate and our political destiny, Sarah Palin is a gift from God.

Here's just one example of Redneck thought on the topic:
