Obama; THERE ARE QUIET STORMS TAKING PLACE
OMG you have to read this from an Obama rally today

UNBELIEVABLE

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/1/21286/24889/30/582729

---------------------------------------------------

But that spirit can’t just be restricted to moments of great catastrophe. Because as I stand here today and look out at the thousands of folks who have gathered here today, I know that there’s some folks that are going through their own quiet storms.

All across America there are quiet storms taking place. There are lives of quiet desperation. People who need just a little bit of help.

Because if there’s a poor child out there, that’s my child. If there’s a senior that’s having trouble, that’s my grandparent. If there’s a guy who’s lost his job, that’s my brother. If there’s a woman out there without healthcare, that’s my sister. Those are the values that built this country. Those are the values we are fighting for.

36. Here is that classic speech from "Grapes of Wrath":

Henry Fonda’s classic speech from ‘Grapes of Wrath’:

Tom Joad: I been thinking about us, too, about our people living like pigs and good rich land layin’ fallow. Or maybe one guy with a million acres and a hundred thousand farmers starvin’. And I been wonderin’ if all our folks got together and yelled –
Ma Joad: Tommy, they’d drag you out and cut you down just like they done to Casey.
Tom: They’d drag me anyways. Sooner or later they’ll get me one way or another. Till then –
Ma: Tommy, you’re not aimin’ to kill nobody.
Tom: No, Ma, not that. That ain’t it. Just, as long as I’m an outlaw anyways, maybe I can do something, just find out somethin’, just scrounge around and maybe find out what it is that’s wrong and see if they ain’t somethin’ that can be done about it. I ain’t thought it out that clear, Ma. I can’t. I don’t know enough.
Ma: How am I gonna know about ya, Tommy? They could kill ya and I’d never know. They could hurt ya. How am I gonna know?
Tom: Maybe it’s like Casey says. A fellow ain’t got a soul of his own, just little piece of a big soul, the one big soul that belongs to everybody, then – Ma: Then what, Tom?
Tom: Then it don’t matter. I’ll be all around in the dark. I’ll be everywhere, wherever you can look. Wherever there’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad. I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry and they know supper’s ready and where people are eatin’ the stuff they raise and livin’ in the houses they build. I’ll be there, too.
Ma: I don’t understand it, Tom.
Tom: Me, neither, Ma, but – just somethin’ I been thinkin’ about.

37. Same philosophy as John Donne's "No man is an island."
No man is an Island, entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main;
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were;

Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in Mankind;
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

John Donne, Meditation XVII
English clergyman & poet (1572 - 1631)

I add my comment that a good liberal arts education exposes people/citizens/voters to such thoughts and philosphies. Grapes of Wrath was a novel assigned in English Lit, before it was a movie. There is more power to influence in these words of John Donne or John Steinbeck, than in the expletive laced rantings to which less educated people are driven in their rage and frustration. I'd really like to see Democratic Underground posters raise the level of political discourse by following the example of Obama and learning to express themselves without cursing out other posters.

30. This is why I'm a Democrat.
My parents were both republicans. Not the wacky variety that has sprung up in the last 20 years, but the old fashioned type. They were devout Catholics (again, not the new wacky type, but the old fashioned, common sense, salt of the earth type) and sent me to Catholic school for my first six years of education. The values that were instilled in me by my parents and my early education could not let me be anything but a progressive Democrat.

Thank you Senator Obama. We are roughly the same age and we saw US politics shift beneath our feet as we were coming of age. Thank you for reminding us of what is good, of what "values" really means.
