You know what's going to happen if McCain dumps Palin...
He's going to blame it on the "left-wing bloggers" making things too hard for her family, and the right-wing fundie base is going to eat it up. Then he will pick a pro-choice running mate and say the lefty bloggers made me do it. Or something like that.

1. Don't worry. Push right back and blame it on McCrash's lack of executive ability.

2. So the counter-argument is--if he can't stand up to a bunch political junkies on the internet...
...he could they stand up to Russia and Iran?

Heads we win, tails he loses.

16. I'm not saying we will lose. I'm just saying that's what he'll do.
It will be fun watching the Republican party implode over the next year or so. This world is going to run out of popcorn. :)

3. nope, they would attack him for giving in to the liberals
the only way he can deal with replacing her is if they can convince everyone it was HER decision. but even that would hurt him.

Problem is, keeping her probably is too.

I think this has reached "Harriet Miers" level critical mass.

10. He can't afford to look like a flip-flopper when it comes to his VP choice
By dumping Palin and going with someone else, he'll just come across as indecisive.

He's going to have to grin and bear it. And nothing could be better for us.

McCain could put the pressure on the media to back off, they could turn her into the perky, reforming, "new" conservative McCain tried to say she was.

Unless the investigation in AK turns up real dirt, this too could pass.

I'm not so sure it will. She's had a rough day today. They will have to push back hard and well these next few days but they do have the platform. They might do it.

She'll have to drop the "bridge to nowhere" bit in her speech, like she dropped the Hillary line today. She could give a heartwarming 'what's a mother to do' speech that wins over the idiots on her daughter being pregnant (she could win me over on that, its not her fault and she should not be blamed) then its all up to the investigation in AK and if she says "he tazered my nephew, I was wild with fear and grief' she might pull that off too.

We'll have to ride it out.

But so far? It's been a pretty fun ride.

This is certainly gonna be a fun season, I can see that. McCain's pick of this inexperienced candidate speaks to his lack of judgment and willingness to do anything to win. Not that he will win, mind you.

19. Jindal will soon be seen as a hero to many republicans
He didn't want to be on this sinking ship, but after Gustav (assuming all goes well), he'll get the lionshare of credit for the planning and response. Evangelicals will love this guy and the republicans will be able to keep their executive experience argument. And despite all the religious zealotry, he seems to be a pretty intelligent person, enough to hold his own against Biden in the debate.

I'm not happy about this, but if I were McCain, that's what I would do.

21. A pretty intelligent person who performed an exorcism on a
woman AND cured her of cancer. A pretty intelligent person who wants to teach creationism in school. He's not just intelligent-he's a fuckin' miracle worker. Another inexperienced candidate, Hurricane Gustav aside.

He's a religious kook without the corruption, family, and secessionist baggage. He'd be perfect for them.

Hasn't he only been in office since January 14th, 2008? That's less time than Palin.

32. If Gustav goes well for Jindal, the idiots won't even care about executive experience.
Sadly. Seriously, this is the only way McCain can keep the fundies and appear to be competent. He's not getting the "dissatisfied Hillary voters" he thought he'd get with Palin. So what does he have to lose at this point? Again, Jindal will do nothing to drive away the religious clowns. And he could attract some independents impressed with how he handling Gustav.

It probably won't work (based on the forthcoming judgment attacks from the Democrats), but Jindal, unlike Palin, should not be underestimated.

28. Not. A. Chance.
If McCain dumps Palin (still don't think it will happen), the base will turn on him with a fury. He can try to blame it on whoever he wants, they'll still see him as the "coward who bowed to liberal pressure and let all of us down."

He dumps Palin: he's toast. He sticks with Palin: he's probably just slightly less toasted.
