8. Here's my take after watching the first ~12 minutes |
|
It was Palin, a male Dem, and a male independent. The Independent clearly had the most able mind of the three of them and seems to be left-leaning, at least on social issues (e.g. he seems very pro-choice during an abortion question). The Dem sucked, plain and simple. Palin seems well-versed on Alaska-specific issues that wouldn't matter to most people. Overall, she seems like a capable debater (i.e. she does a decent job of spinning answers), but it was mostly just a rundown on their social views so far.
Looking at the election results: Palin(R) got 48%, the Dem got 41%, and the Independent got 9%. It's pretty clear that Palin benefited from the Independent who no doubt took away a lot of votes from the Dem since both seemed to be very liberal on social issues during the debate.

10. The Independent is Andrew Halcro, whose blog has been mentioned here.. |
|
www.andrewhalcro.com That guy is a wealth of information about her. They are not friends at all. And yes, he seems to be a brilliant guy that looks at things outside of Alaska, and does not have that insular 'short-term gain, long-term loss' mentality that seems pervasive in Alaskan republican politics. Interesting fellow.

On a sidenote, she sounded like she would have voted for the GI bill from an answer about military vets. Hope that comes up during the national debate.
On edit: She sounded like she was playing the victim card a little bit, almost claiming a bias by the moderators when answering a stem cell question.

11. DISTURBING question at the 32:55 minute mark |
|
It's from the 2nd girl asking a question from the alternative schools.
Basically, it sounds like this is a girl who is in high school (Bethel Alternative Boarding School) and she has a TWO YEAR-OLD son. After telling us that she has a son, she starts to ask a question. I'm expecting something about education, maybe health care, or something really substantial for her young child considering that she's a mother still in high school. Nope. She wants to know what they will do to protect her son's future hunting and fishing rights. Okay, I'm guessing they just scripted some questions for the students to ask, but still, I found that a high school girl with a 2 year-old son gets to ask a question and it's about hunting and fishing.
