6. "I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories" |
|
"I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits."
It is his hope that "individuals with computers & the internet(s)" will control themselves.

"your candidates McCain and Palin are sooo fucked." Only on DU would quoting Obama and asking people to do what he asked be seen as supporting McCain. My candidate's own words: "And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits."

33. However, I respectfully disagree. |
|
Palin is a "Family Values" candidate who strongly supports abstinence only sex education and birth control. How her own policies and beliefs impact her and her family is relevant. Obama and McCain are both running as change candidates. Isn't it fair to ask how that change works?Romney and Guiliani both ran as managers. Isn't it fair to ask how effective is their management?
Obama doesn't want the magnifying glass turned on his family. Not because there is anything wrong; but rather as a reflex protection. However, scrutiny of his "Family Values" isn't as relevant as that of Gov Palin. Obama is NOT running as a "family values" candidate.
This is unfortunate for the poor daughter. But, it was Gov Palin's own press announcement that brought it out to the light of day.

9. For many here, the answer is "Yes, Obama is a concern troll." |
|
To them it doesn't matter how Obama wants to run the campaign. They have the right to express themselves as they see fit, and nothing Obama says is going to change the way they go about their campaigning.
Some probably think that Obama is insincere in saying "People’s families are off limits.” They know that he is really winking when he says this. others probably suspect he is sincere in his statement, but they don't trust him to be able to win without some doing the "dirty work" for him. (Kind of like Mayor Daley getting the dead to vote for JFK.)

19. I disagree with Barack on this. |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 07:36 AM by AndyA
Republicans promote their "family values" and don't hesitate to condemn others for their lifestyle. They don't want gay people to have the same rights as everyone else. They don't want schools to teach sex education, which is often a kid's first introduction on how to protect themselves from disease and how to avoid pregnancy.
Palin feels it's perfectly OK to tell others what they must do if they are pregnant. Rape and incest victims must have that baby. It's what God wants. :eyes:
When the Republicans get their sorry asses out of everyone else's bedrooms, then they can ask for privacy concerning their own families. But as long as they're telling you, me, and the rest of America what is correct for us, their families are fair game.
You're wrong on this, Barack. It isn't the fact that an unmarried teenager is pregnant. It's that her Mother feels its OK to tell gay people they don't have the right to see their partner in the hospital, even if they're deathly ill. It's because Palin feels its OK to deny gay partners access to employer-provided health care. And it's because Palin feels its OK to tell another mother and daughter what they must do if the daughter gets raped by her step father.
When you enter public service, you expose yourself and your family to greater public scrutiny. It goes with the territory, and it's part of the job. If we're expected to trust these people with our lives and our destiny, they should be comfortable with the lives they and their family lead.
No double standards.

of the "values" crowd without pointing out the hypocrisy. It is a catch 22 that some just don't get.
That is not the same thing as attacking the family or the victim of the family's misguided leadership coming from the parents.
If I am going to say there is a problem with Sarah's inconsistent story about Trig or the pregnancy of her daughter how can I do it without mentioning Trig or Bristol? I cannot! Is that an attack on them? NO!
If those that want to protect the families and the children like Trig and Bristol then they should go after the people that are responsible, Sarah Palin and her husband, John MCain and the McCain GOP.

This entire situation reeks and I suspect that there's been some undue pressure being put to bear on the boy and his family to marry the daughter. This is a potential blatant abuse of power that ought to be investigated.
We've had enough people abusing power in our government for the past 8 years we don't need another who looks to be just as likely to abuse.

Taking the "high road" is for lesser, and wimpier, mortals - except, I am sure, for Obama who, I hope, gets a pass from them since he is the candidate.
One reason, among many, that I consider myself a Democrat, is that we do not, at least most of the time, act like repubs. If I wanted to be nasty 24/7, I know that there is a party that will welcome me.

There's not much Obama could do to stop the feeding frenzy now. But I also hate seeing Democrats acting just as nasty & vicious as the Republicans. I KNOW Republicans are vicious & hateful; that's why I'm not one. But stuff like this makes it seem like it's less a question of party & more about basic human nature. We might have 21st-century technology, but we use it for the same rumor-mongering the 19th-century old ladies used to do in front of the general store. "Did you hear Ms. Smith's daughter is pregnant??!!" "Oh, my, how horrid!"
