Republicans mock Democrats for treating Barack Obama as a demi-god. But now they have found their own messiah: Sarah Palin. Delegates attending the first day of the party's convention compared her to Margaret Thatcher, Harry Truman, a rock star, Cinderella and Lyndon Johnson, as a cult of personality almost visibly grew around the all-American, all-conservative mother of five.
The virtually unknown Alaska governor has filled a need within the Republican ranks to believe in a candidate, something that few of them could do in Senator John McCain. With or without the presentable moose hunter by his side, they would have rallied to the Arizona senator this week. Republicans are good at unity, good at winning. But now they will mean it.
Mrs Palin's nomination acceptance speech on Wednesday is more keenly awaited than Mr McCain's the day after. As Democrats flocked to Mr Obama's mock Greek temple in Denver last week,
