1. You left out a key word! |
|
Do we think Palin "should" be replaced or "will" be replaced?

7. I Would Have A Lot More Respect For Him If He Chose His Friend, Lieberman Or Tom Ridge |
|
It shows how malleable he is.

9. Impulsive, Reactionary and Not in Control of his campaign. |

I think he lost so much more than he gained, and what he lost cannot be recovered.

6. We're at a tipping point now |

She is just slightly more toxic to the ticket than replacing her would be. Once AIP takes hold, it's over the side, boys, she's going down!

11. HELL YES! This is as Damning as a candidate being a member of |
|
the ACP or some Southern Separatist group.
It would be buried, though, had she never made the address to their convention this year.

If it was a southern separatist group her reasons for wanting to secede could be construed as racist...In this case she comes off as a crank...

This isn't Harriet Miers or some Cabinet choice which can be withdrawn...This was the defining moment of McCane's candidacy...I am concerned he is non compos mentes...

14. I voted NO. But I am not sure. He will lose the fundamentalist and far right if he does |
|
His only option at keeping the far right and fundamentlist placated would be to appoint Mike Huckabee - and I think that would pose a number of problems as well.
The extreme, far right and the rightwing fundamentalist love Sarah Palin because she is one of them. McCain knows that normally speaking someone that far out would not normally sell nationally to a majority of Americans - only to a devoted but significant minority. Clearly, he thought Sarah would be an exception because she is a woman and because of what he thought was a populist image.
If Sen. McCain dumps Sarah Palin, the fundamentalist base would be furious. If he appoints another far right fundamentalist like Huckabee, that would also be a very hard sell. How long would it take before Huckabee sermons started showing up on youtube and getting into the msm?

18. he is certainly not going to pick Phyllis. if he picks Dole or Hutchinson |
|
he still will have fundamentalist wrath to deal with..they are perceived by them as way too moderate.
He would have to change strategy altogether and basically accept that he will have only lukewarm support from the extreme far right and the fundamentalist.
If I had been a GOP operative I would have advised him to pick Kay Baily Hutchinson in the first place. She would have actually had the plausibility of picking up some Hillary supporters and a lot of independents. But that would have meant luke warm support from the extreme right-wing and fundamentalist base. If he takes that route now, at this point, he would be in danger of loosing many of them. Not that they would vote for Obama; some would, but most would either stay home or cast a begrudging and resentful vote for McCain.

It would not surprise me if she is replaced; it would not surprise me if she isn't replaced.
It would, however, surprise me if the idea wasn't being discussed within republican circles today.

19. McCain was forced to choose between a dwindling number of |
|
lousy choices for his veep nom.
His team likely knew the fundies would not abide a pro-Choice pick.
So in essence, he was left with a handful of highly-flawed fundie-friendly choices.
Palin was one, and I thought would be pretty much a joke going in. Now that she's the pick, the McCain team will meet frequently to determine if she is a high-maintenance loser or a maverick-enhancing plus.
My guess is that it will be the former and Palin will "step aside in the interest of the party," so that ostensibly it's her decision, but behind the closed doors it will be more a matter of, "I'm sorry, Governor, John wants you off the ticket."
