Palin is appealing to some key sociodemographics and we'd better wise up. |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 10:45 AM by dmsRoar
There are crucial blocks of voters that the numerous Palin scandals will in fact cater to and attract to the ticket. We've got to face facts here, and it ain't pretty.
1. Anti-American secessionist patriots. Not a large group, but a group rarely wooed. They'll love her.
2. Parents who preach abstinence only who are soon to be surprise grandparents. In our country this is a massive block of voters whose self-righteous hypocrisy has finally been validated by someone equally as self-righteous and hypocritical.
3. Reformers who ran 527s and copped millions in earmarks. Now the average Joe who's run a 527 and touted reform can vote for a real role model.
4. Bitter busybodies who help hatch revenge plots against their sisters ex-husbands. Ever watch Nancy Grace? The country is teeming with these folks. And make no mistake about it: as their hateful lives collapse around them they'll still find time to vote on Election Day as long as it doesn't interfere with their plans to hit someone.
5. Polar bear lovers who hate the terrain that provides polar bear habitat. I think by now we all realize that polar bears are awesome, so awesome they wouldn't allow themselves the wussy designation of "endangered" if they had any say about it. There's no need to protect such totally awesome polar bears by not drilling right through their dens to black gold. And, let's face it, Democrats have dropped the ball on capturing the mood of the electorate on this.
6. Voters who have been looking for a Vice President who professes no understanding of what a Vice president does. Let's not kid ourselves. If we're honest, that's exactly the kind of Vice President we all have secretly desired during these times of great national crisis. But what kind of lame ass does the Democratic Party put up? Yep, someone with a full grasp of all the issues who is ready to step into the job immediately.
7. Parents of children serving in Iraq or about to serve in Iraq who profess no knowledge or understanding of the nature of the conflict in Iraq that will be affecting their children. Sure, perhaps only eight or nine voters nationwide fall into this group, but they've found their candidate. And they vote.
8. Freudians. Fans of one of psychology's true pioneers simply can't believe how enamored they are with the McCain-Palin ticket. Really, they can't believe it. They can't stop thinking about it or talking about it either. Let's face it, they're obsessing about it. If they could vote three times for this ticket they would while screaming "Electra" in the booth.
9. Women who want to vote for a woman who loves causes that are harmful to women. I'm sorry to report that Palin is the perfect VP for those voters willing to stand underneath the glass ceiling as it shatters and impales them with thousands of foot-long dagger-shards.
10. Voters hoping for more politicians who wrench tax money from their grasps in order to build bridges to nowhere and then deny they ever wanted to build bridges to nowhere. We're in trouble, fellow Democrats. It's true. The republicans have totally wrapped up the stupid vote.

4. Sounds like a party of one. I'm waiting for the media to latch onto #1 and her "anti-Americanism". |

They have given voice to McCain on Obama and Michelle being anti-American, but being part of a group that wants to succeed is by defintion anti-American.

I didn't get it at first, but to English professors that is the height of humor.

13. At a party over the weekend |
|
since I was the well-known Democrat of the bunch, I had several people who are Republicans ask me what I thought about Palin. I answered, "Oh, the bimbo?" which elicited a disgusted look on their face followed by their mandatory, "But seriously...". I replied I was serious (more disgust). I then would explain I was concerned about her lack of experience, etc. Several times I got the, "But Obama's experience, etc." The first time I said, "surely you're not comparing Chicago to Alaska?" I would also explain that I was an original Hillary supporter. That invariably got a "You're not still going to vote for Obama, are you?" to which I replied, "As if there's a real choice here? Just who else is there to vote for?"
One woman explained how her husband who is a geologist with an oil company and how they thought she was a great pick. I told her that I thought that the two of them should vote for McCain as that was in their best interest, but I'm not in the oil business.
So there are some people who are supporting McCain in spite of the very obvious shortcomings of Palin. And they are actually intelligent, albeit narrow thinking people too.
I asked my wife later if I had a sign on my back that said "The Democrat"?

15. I agree that she will appeal to a LARGE group in #2. However... |
|
This absolutely is *not* hypocrisy. It may make abstinence only education look naive and foolish for not teaching them about birth control. But it is definitely not hypocritical.
Hypocrisy would have been teaching her daughter about birth control. So her daughter ending up pregnant is evidence that the Palin is not a hypocrite on this subject.

22. No. I don't believe that word means what you think it means. |
|
Hypocrisy means you say one thing while doing the opposite. Hypocrisy does not mean you say something which happens to be wrong.

So my question stands....do you think she still professes the efficacy of abstinence-only doctrine? If so, she's a hypocrite.
(But thanks for the attempt at the lesson.)

26. How do you know she does not believe that which she preaches? |
|
But thanks for the lesson on mind reading!
:)
Actually, you base your argument on a false pretense: she favors only teaching abstinence because she believes it is as effective as sex education. Having been so recently tutored in mind-reading :), I will undertake that same exercise and agree with you that she does NOT believe it is as effective.
Now, to be a hypocrite, she would have to be arguing that it is. Has she?
You and I argue this case from a physical world perspective. I don't care how much fucking teenagers do, but I would like to help them protect themselves from negative consequences as a result.
The abstinence-only crowd are only concerned with the soul. So far as they are concerned, pre-marital fucking damages that soul. For the more radical even inter-marital fucking damages that soul. Physically they actually WANT women indulging in pre-marital sex to get pregnant as that serves as a reminder to others not to.
You could certainly drag up a lot of quotes along the lines of, "abstinence works best." But what do they mean by that exactly? Given that nobody ever got preggers by not engaging in sexual activities {insert in-vitro disclaimer here}, then it is true that actual abstinence, not the theory, teaching or planning on abstinence, but really and truly abstaining from sexual activies is the one absolutely guaranteed way not to get pregnant.
Or as my sister said, "the rhythm method worked perfectly; the first time we had sex when we knew we shouldn't have, we got pregnant".
Again, you and they would see completely different meanings in the sentence, "abstinence works best". It does work best when practiced. While teaching alternatives for those who will not pratice it works best for when it is not practiced.
