To The DU Handwringing Brigade: THIS Is What Vetting Looks Like!
You're welcome to parrot McPOW's "the internets are mean" bullshit as long as you like. Everyone now knows damn near everything there is to know about The Worst VP Selection EVAH, and it's largely thanks to those mean internets.

Or as AmericaBlog puts it:

http://www.americablog.com/2008/09/this-is-what-vetting-looks-like.html

"The new GOP talking point, dutifully repeated in the last 24 hours by McCain's spokesman, by Bill Bennett, by Gary Bauer, by Bill O'Reilly, and pretty much by every Republican surrogate on TV (they're very good at handing out talking points) is that the blogs are mean. That's John McCain's only response to the revelation that he didn't vet his choice for vice president of the United States? That bloggers are mean? Wow. If John McCain can't handle words from DailyKos, how is he going to handle bombs from Al Qaeda? But putting that aside, what really irks the Republicans is that the blogs, and the corporate media, did the vetting of Sarah Palin that McCain failed, and refused, to do. The next time a McCain supporter throws a temper tantrum over how mean everyone is to Sarah Palin, ask them why John McCain didn't even bother vetting our potentially future commander in chief. Had Sarah Palin been fully vetted, we'd never be discussing any of this.

"

Just a week or two ago DUers were kvetching about Democrats "not taking the gloves" off (really just a variation on the "Obambi" slam). Well the gloves are off biotches!

Palin is the republican VP candidate. She's fair game.

17. As someone you'd call a handringer, let me correct you.
No one in their right mind is saying "Leave Palin alone." What we're saying is that you have to attack her smart. We're saying leave Bristol Palin alone. So far no one's gone after Obama's kids or Biden's grandkids.

There's a wealth of fair game attacks, from her solicitation of earmarks to her mismanagement of Wasilla's budget to her crazy assed ideas on evolution and abstinance only "sex education", to her affiliation with a secessionist fringe group, to her ignorance on national security matters, to her corrupt abuse of the governor's office. But you leave family out of it (except of course her husband's corporate ties).

Tehre's a million fair game attacks on her. What I object to are people who just want to zero in on the personal lives of the candidate's family. First, it's something we did well in the 90s claiming was off limits and improper to attack on. Second, it's disasterous marketing for the Democratic brand. It's red meat to those who'll vote for Obama anyway. But it makes the Democratic brand look meanspirited and "more of the same" along with Republican Rovian personal attacks. It turns off new voters and turns away swing voters. So making an issue of her daughter's pregancy is not only hypocritical for pro-choicers, it's also dumb politics.

20. She put her kids on the hook, as bait, and flung them into the river
None of us even knew who she was last week, or cared.. SHE said YES, when she KNEW she should have said NO.

The baby stuff was the bait that the press was afraid to touch, and they were too lazy to dig up much more, but once the baby stuff caught fire, and other people saw the whole sordid pile of manure left in her wake, the press was FORCED to start researching too (or really just following all the links that people like US have posted online after WE dug and dug and found them all..

None of us interviewed anyone, nor did we ambush them as they went to their car..we did not stake out their houses..

We just followed the bread crumbs. and apparently finally embarrassed the press into getting off their asses and finally doing what they are paid to do..

and in the process, we might just spare all of us a Madame President Palin..

Her kids, the older ones were never shy about their escapades, and their Mom sold them out..not us.

26. And if her mom doesn't care, neither can we?
Once her mom sold them out, it is our duty to make use of them as we see fit?

27. I'm not seeing anything that's a direct bash on Bristol...
I'm seeing bashing of the mother for:

A - Lying, or possibly lying.

B - Being a high and mighty Fundy with fake family values.

C - A possible cover up with truly interesting factoids... like getting on a plane whilst in labor and about to give birth to a child who has birth defects, putting that child into FURTHER danger.

D - Harping on Sarah for being so lame as to put her family in this position.

E - Harping on McCain for NOT fully vetting his VP choice.

What I have NOT seen is any judgement on Bristol herself. If you have, please show me the asshole who did such a horrid thing.

2. If the Republican ticket can't handle the truth being exposed, then it deserves
to go down in flames, lest we let a dishonest campaign pull a fast one on the American people yet again.

Biden will not be able to play hardball with Palin. Will Adminejahed,Putin or any other world leader not play hardball with her just because she is a woman. I say bull,if you want to play with the big boys then we don't change the game just because she is a woman.

9. Vetting is for latte-sipping, Prius-driving, intellectual egghead libruls
who eat arugula.

Seriously, though...there's enough wrong with Palin policy and experience-wise, the personal stuff isn't nearly as disturbing....more entertaining, maybe, but not as dangerous.

10. Lazy ass media, lazy ass republicans. We got the dirt on Secessionist Sarah
before the republicans knew about it and the lazy ass media picked up on it.

We won't get compensation, but it makes me that much more determined to keep hammering at her.

Poor widdoo Secessionist Sarah. Hit her again; she got up.

12. The gloves are coming off and its payback time - the stakes are too high this time
I'm glad to see it - the blogs are digging the dirt (and it's true, factual dirt) and they are making the MSM pay attention. That's a testament to the power blogs now wield and their role in society today.

I say unleash all of them. We aren't affiliated with the Obama campaign and our research is clearly superior to the GOP spin machine in that its true and thoroughly researched.

13. Sarah is fair game. Bristol is off limits.
But, hell, what with Troopergate, the bridge to nowhere, Ted Stevens, etc, that still leaves plenty of other avenues for attack. Not to mention the issues...

15. The superior minds rest largely in the Democratic camp
That, combined with a fierce resolve after 8 years of no leadership, will allow us to tear the GOP's apart this election cycle. What our Party does with this opportunity could lead to brighter days ahead.

19. Meh. When I thnk of that sort of thing, I'm always reminded of Megadeath...
http://www.lyricsfreak.com/m/megadeth/countdown+to+extinction_20091358.html

Endangered species, caged in fright,
Shot in cold blood, no chance to fight.
The stage is set, now pay the price.
An ego boost, dont think twice.
Technology, the battles unfair,
You pull the hammer without a care.
Squeeze the trigger that makes you man,
Pseudo-safari, the hunt is canned...
The hunt is canned.

/chorus/
All are gone, all but one.
No contest, nowhere to run.
No more left, only one.
This is it, this is the countdown to extinction.

Tell the truth, you wouldnt dare.
The skin and trophy, oh so rare.
Silence speaks louder than words.
Ignore the guilt, and take your turn.
Liars anagram is lairs,
Man you were never even there.
Killed a few feet from the cages,
Point blank, youre so courageous...
So courageous.

/chorus/

One hour from now,
Another species of life form
Will disappear off the face of the planet
Forever...and the rate is accelerating.

/chorus/
