McCain manager: "This election is not about issues."
From The Fix:

Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain's presidential bid, insisted that the presidential race will be decided more over personalities than issues during an interview with Post editors this morning.

"This election is not about issues," said Davis. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

Davis added that issues will no doubt play a major role in the decisions undecided voters will make but that they won't ultimately be conclusive....

...

Davis demurred when asked when Palin will sit for interviews with major news organizations, pointing out that now would not be the right time given the "combative" attitude the media has seemingly adopted toward Palin. Pressed on the issue, Davis insisted that "we allot a lot more access in our campaign than any campaign in modern political history....we'll get around to it."

9. The GOP can't have the election being about the issues because....
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 01:07 PM by ...of J.Temperance
They know that the majority of the issues that the GOP support are way outside of the mainstream, the GOP in general are now an Extremist party, with an Extremist platform that actively discriminates against those who aren't like them and/or disagrees with them on a range of issues.

Republican policies are not popular amongst the majority of the public, from wanting more trillion dollar taxcuts at the expense of the middle class, to continuing an unpopular war, to wanting to allow the Government to invade peoples' bedrooms, to wanting to privatize Social Security, to wanting to ban abortion including in the cases of rape and incest, to wanting to teach Creationism in schools.

These are NOT policies that are popular amongst the mainstream population.

So of course the GOP don't want the election to be about the issues, because an election fought on the issues means that they lose.

The GOP want the election to ONLY be about:

McCain = POW....Terror....9/11....Terror....McCain = POW....9/11....

On Edit: I just posted the above in another thread about this same topic....we already have one thread with a near identical title on the exact same topic....I don't know what's with all of the multiple threads the past few days.

11. "the "combative" attitude the media has seemingly adopted toward Palin" ?????
All I've heard is what a great reformer she is, without the news hosts ever asking what it was specifically that she reformed. All I hear on cable is news hosts asking Republicans about the daughter's pregnancy and letting them tell us what a great thing it is that she kept her baby, without ever being challenged on the mother's stance against contraception and sex education. I see no stories being reported on cable or network news about Palin's poor performance as mayor of Wasilla where she ran the town into a deficit of $22 million. Or her whacky church. Or support of the 'bridge to nowhere'. Or her AIP membership. Or her various attempts to arbitrarily fire people and ban library books.

What "combative" attitude towards Palin from the media?

13. Wow!!
The "honesty" continually offered by McSame's campaign advisors has been a breath of fresh air in this campaign! I guess the "straight talk express" really is more than just a fancy name.

14. Repukes are falling off their rocker
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 01:13 PM by kwolf68
I honestly believe we are seeing a party completely coming off their rocker. They were put into position to govern this nation and failed miserably. Their anti-this, anti-that, big gubment and evil Libruls are all bad mantra is now falling on deaf ears.

Now with the prospects that not just a Liberal Democrat, but a black Liberal Democrat is so wildly popular with the masses they are now starting to do and say anything. Their brains have gotten locked up by the foolishness of their ideology and the myth’s that they perpetuate are no longer having any resounding resonance outside of places in the back woods, with rednecks or with the radical clerics who lead their sheeple en masse to vote for the yearly theocratic politician.

But the rest of America, those of us who don’t see “god on the dollar bill” as the preeminent issues of our times are bucking this fanatical trip into FreakJesus-land.

Oh don’t get me wrong. If and most certainly I hope when we have a President Obama on the job, the workings of Christ will not be left out to the dust. Obama will not usher in an era of Satan worshipping and goat killings; that is unless you believe working to provide health care, promote peace, bring people together, working for solutions to our housing, energy, and education problems, and to work for that without power or voice to be the work of the devil.

Obviously this isn't as bad as his blowup at Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC, but it's still good.

19. Every action in this election has been to distract from the issues
Barack Obama scared the crap out of them Thursday guys. Scared them like no Democrat in a long, long time.

They had hoped Obama was weak but he's very much not. He didn't hide from progressive politics or hedge. They are on the run.

18. Can they get the press to buy it?
That's really the question. I bet they get close, but in the end the ticket is now such a joke, I don't see how they can go along with it. Then again, our last 2 elections were over who we'd rather have a beer with.

23. Of course they don't want to run on the issues. American is in crisis right now. GOP
never runs on the issues affecting the majority of americans. They run on patriotism, which Disraeli said could be used to get middle class & pooor people to vote against their own self-interest.
