Look Long & Hard At This Photograph, America. I Mean Really Long & Hard

Look long and hard at this photograph, America. I mean really long and hard. Because when all is said and done, this is what selecting a vice presidential running mate is all about.

Look long and hard at this photograph, America. I mean really long and hard. Now, squint a little and picture Joe Biden raising his right hand to take the oath of office as a stunned Michelle Obama stands at his left side and Jill Biden at his right. A disturbing thought, but at the same time comforting. Because Biden would be ready to lead.

Look long and hard at this photograph, America. I mean really long and hard. Now, squint a little and picture Sarah Palin raising her right hand to take the oath of office as a stunned Cindy McCain stands at her left side and Todd Palin at her right. Not just a disturbing thought, but a nightmarish one because the Republican nominee-to-be rang up an obscure wingnut with a walk-in closet full of skeletons in a fit of pique.

Long long and hard at this photograph, America. I mean really long and hard. Because this is what selecting a vice presidential running mate is all about. This is not what John McCain is all about. What John McCain is all about is being a worn-out pol who is addled at best, pickled at worst and nothing if impetuous beyond his many years. Unfit to select, let alone lead.

22. I was sixteen and I will never forget it if I live to be a thousand.
Swearing in on the plane was kind of strange but at same time very important to have him sworn in before he was airborne. The grief was unbelievable and the fear was palpable. We were deep shit in the Cold War, Vietnam, Civil Rights just getting really active, lots of stuff. And even though I didn't agree with the war and other things, Lyndon was smart capable and knew the ropes. I wasn't afraid of him as president, just what the outside world might try to do.

It is absolutely true that natural causes, plane crashes, train wrecks, skiing accidents, car crashes and other accidents could happen to any of the candidates.

or the incumbents ...
so using this very sad picture as a teaching tool is not at all out of line, if used correctly

32. LBJ played a large role in this coup on our government . . .
backed by oil companies and other wealthy capitalists ---

It was not important nor essential to have LBJ sworn in --- the succession is automatic --

The seeming purposeful delay in waiting for the Judge to arrive was suggested to have had

more to do with the needs of the plotters than any idea of serving our nation.

69. You ignore the OP's point
VP selection is the nominee's first executive decision.

JFK and LBJ hated each other on a personal level.

JFK, AT THE TIME, given the available information, made
the right choice. He had no way of seeing the future.

To second guess him now is like second guessing Pickett's
Charge at Gettysburg.

84. I'm well aware of the supposed point ..... but if you read the comments . . .
and understand how naive so many here are -- you understand that they don't get that

LBJ was forced on JFK -- a matter of blackmail.

The coup was widely based --- tho true, LBJ did hate JFK --

JFK didn't "make a choice" . . . LBJ was forced on him ---

Try to catch up with Evelyn Lincoln who was JFK's secretary . . . she explains what

happened quite well.

Again -- your VP choice may turn out to lead an assassination against you --

for all we know they poisoned FDR in his final days when he had gotten rid of the liberal

threat of Wallace and put Truman in . . . the danger for him grew!

Or, your VP choice may be a Trojan Horse like Lieberman/Gore ---

Again --- Obama should have ensured that his VP was to his left ---

I've read that the Chicago/New Orleans/Tampa mob, Nixon, the CIA,or Castro was behind the JFK assassination as well. I've read that Oswald might have even done it(Gasp!)on his own.

Any of the above actors seem considerably more credible than LBJ.

105. Here is a CNN link to the allegation.
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 01:22 AM by anotheryellowdog
Again, it is a link to the allegation. There is no claim that the allegation is necessarily true; in fact, quite the contrary. Check it out here. The intro to the article states:

Thursday, November 20, 2003 Posted: 10:46 AM EST (1546 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A television documentary claiming Lyndon B. Johnson helped plot the Kennedy assassination was condemned as an absurd smear by Johnson's family and former staff members.

A History Channel film that aired Monday alleges that then-Vice President Johnson and members of his staff were responsible for President Kennedy's 1963 killing, said LBJ Foundation Chairman Tom Johnson, no relation to the former president.

A little more digging led me to this at Google Video. The video presented there is apparently the first of nine installments of a Nigel Turner series entitled "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" presented by The History Channel. The ninth segment, entitled "The Guilty Men" directly implicated LBJ in the assassination of President Kennedy. The History Channel subsequently pulled that segment when they came under fire from Lady Bird Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford among others. Specifically, the details section of the above Google Video linked Part I states:

"...The ninth segment, titled "The Guilty Men", directly implicated Lyndon B. Johnson. Within days, Johnson's widow, Lady Bird Johnson, more of his surviving associates, ex-President Jimmy Carter, and the lone, living Warren Commission commissioner and ex-President Gerald R. Ford immediately complained to the History Channel. They subsequently threatened legal action against Arts & Entertainment Company, owner of the History Channel. "The Guilty Men" segment was completely withdrawn by the History Channel. ..."

Some believe it; some don't. I was fifteen years old when JFK was killed. I doubt there are any theories I haven't heard. Personally, I wouldn't rule Johnson out, but that's just my opinion. You asked for a credible link to the allegation, so I gave it to you.

Edit: I just found this youtube link to "The Guilty Men" segment dealing with LBJ.

111. "This episode examines yet another theory" after they'd already trotted out about half a dozen
others. The History Channel, often referred to as the Hitler Channel for its extensive programming devoted to said SOB,is a lot of fun to watch but is as devoted to sensationalism as to history, and if they'd had any credible evidence they'd have run the segment instead of pulling it.

The bar is set a lot higher when it comes to slander of a public person than a private individual. Apparently The History Channel either knew they were airing a lot of half baked conjecture or they didn't have the guts to expose one of the foulest conspiracies in this country's history.

Yep,it is merely an allegation, delivered by an organization hardly known for rigorously vetting its stories.

147. First of all the A&E/History Channel which exists at the moment . . .
is "under new management" . . .

What happens there now bears little resemblance to the effort to give the public the
truth, especially in presenting the long suppressed documentary TMWKK ....

Evidently, the final segment was actually confiscated -- and as you can see A&E pretty
much shut down.

Not that the nation was shocked at the info re LBJ -- it was long suspected --
Really the only people who were objecting were the LBJ family - Ford - and Carter.
Carter was an odd add-in in that regard!

They also ran the documentary on the 1992 Classified Records Act and the Tunnheim Panel
which saw the documents --- that documentary was also only seen for a short while and
quickly disappeared --- another documentary tried to rebuke it but was so foolish it
appeared only once or twice and then they gave up.

The original documentary relates that the Tunnheim Panel found that . . .

"OSWALD WAS EMPLOYED BY THE CIA WORKING ON HIGH LEVEL ASSIGNMENTS AND PROBABLY
ALSO FOR THE CIA"

Reporters at the time of the assassination immediately asked for copies of Oswald's
employment records -- IRS filings --- W-2 forms -- they were refused. Presumably,
the Tunnheim Panel got to see those records. Their secret report to Congress occurred
about the time the GOP was impeaching Clinton and everyone was "otherwise occupied" - !!!

Also, there is a memorandum from the CIA to the Secret Service immediately after the
assassination which relates that Oswald had been trained by the CIA to carry out spying
missions in Russia.

Good luck if you're truly interested in this event which was actually a coup on the US
government and which changed our history ---

It was also followed immediately by computers coming on line everywhere --- large
computers which the MSM relied on for the vote count ---

See: http://www.constitution.org/vote/votescam__.htm

In other words, we've had computer steals going on since the mid-1960's . . .!!!

THIS is from my post above, if you have any legitimate interest . . .

"Executive Action" -- a movie made in 1973 --
it was occasionally shown on TV --

Your library will also have High Treason I and High Treason II by
Livingstone

I'd also suggest CROSSFIRE by Jim Marrs - and your library will probably also have that

THESE do not specifically relate to LBJ . . .

for that your library should also have the recently written book by Barr McClellan --
father of Scott McClellan the recently departed PR for the White House ---

"Blood, Power, Money" ---

Barr McClellan was involved with the law firm which represented LBJ's personal interests

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Blood%2C+Power%2C+Money+by+Barr+McClellan&x=16&y=17

You should also see the YouTube video by Madelaine Brown -- LBJ's mistress -- which
outlines the entire plot and which I think is one of the easiest ways to understand
the reality of LBJ --

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79lOKs0Kr_Y

Keep in mind that this plot would not have been attempted had they not understood that
they would have the power of the presidency to protect the cover-up --

Also, keep in mind that the Tunnheim Panel/1992 JFK Classified Records Act found that

"OSWALD WAS EMPLOYED BY THE CIA WORKING ON HIGH LEVEL ASSIGNMENTS
AND PROBABLY ALSO FOR THE FBI."

That's also supported by a CIA letter written to the Secret Service immediately after the
assassination of JFK which outlines that Oswald was trained by the CIA to work on high
level spying missions in Russia.

You will have little chance of seeing TMWKK -- "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" -- on A&E/
History Channel any longer --- so you have to go to YouTube for that --
and I think they have the final documentaries as well which implicate LBJ.

Our history books tell little of the truth of LBJ, who was highly corrupt -
and closely involved with oil interests/Clint Murchison and, therefore, Mafia.

I don't recommend Robt. Caro who began to write the truth about LBJ . . . and
evidently became intimidated.

Specifically re your post . . .

Yes ... immediately after the final parts of TMWKK appeared it came under high power
attack --- including from Jimm Carter which was rather strange since he, himself,
was quite a victim of this power ....

Those still protecting this coup managed to pretty much have the documentary confiscated --
this has been reported; I have no personal knowledge of it -- and presumably not to be
seen again but I think YouTube has it . . . Obviously, many people recorded it --
it played for such a short time over a Thanksgiving holiday that I didn't have time to
record it.

I'm also shocked that there is isn't immediate familiarity with TMWKK -- but, then again,
it probably hasn't been played on TV since Bush began president!

This documentary played in Great Britain probably 10 years before it was brought to America
and it was regularly seen on A&E/History Channel. A&E is now under new ownership and not
too much happens there any longer!

The ninth segment, entitled "The Guilty Men" directly implicated LBJ in the assassination of President Kennedy. The History Channel subsequently pulled that segment when they came under fire from Lady Bird Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford among others.

The info on the coup -- and the involvement of LBJ -- isn't anything new to those who stay
informed on the subject. The actual testimony of LBJ's mistress was new at that time --
but there wasn't widespread shock at this info --

ONLY from the LBJ family and Ford and the odd involvement of Carter ---

Edit: I just found this youtube link to "The Guilty Men" segment dealing with LBJ.

Hopefully that link to the final documentary is still there and working ---
it won't be as widely seen as it would have been on A&E/History -- but glad to know
it still exists!

It was shown over a Thanksgiving weekend as I recall and once or twice more and disappeared.

Thank goodness for YouTube!

Until I heard tape recordings that LBJ fought to keep 'hidden' where one could hear how frightened LBJ was that his life, too, might be in danger. He went on and on long enough to convince me, especially since he was successful in keeping the tapes out of circulation until after his death.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 01:19 PM by defendandprotect
both Pierre Salinger and Bill Moyers ---

though I've never heard Bill Moyers discuss this ---

LBJ began to lose it --- but he was quite cunning in inventing scenarios ---

like suggesting that RFK was responsible for the assassination because

he raised a plot to kill Castro.

The Kennedys fought against these political assassinations ---

and even to the time of Nixon and the Plumbers ... Howard Hunt was still trying

to forge cables suggesting that JFK had ordered the assassination of the Diem Bros/VN.

This was part of the material in Hunt's White House safe.

But coming back to LBJ . . . evidently, his life of violence began to haunt him --

he was quite paranoid and delusional -- and he was, some say, trying to relieve his

guilt by telling the truth which would have been dangerous for him!

See the Barr McClellan book for details on this ---

....and LBJ's violence wasn't only connected to the JFK assassination --

see Madelaine Brown/YouTube for additional info.

159. So you recommend the McClellan book but not the Caro book, which is considered
the definitive biography of LBJ. And one movie and three books which you admit do not directly implicate LBJ.And a youtube video.

Once again, the A&E/History Channel documentaries cover several different theories about the JFK assassination,a real scattershot approach.

Was LBJ corrupt? Almost all politicians are to varying degrees. And he had ties to the oil industry and Clint Murchison, who was also the original owner of the Dallas Cowboys. But how do you jump from him to the Mafia so matter of factly? Was Roger Staubach a Mafia hitman?

There are many theories about the JFK assassination and you've obviously chosen yours. And put a lot of time and effort into it using spurious sources of information.

In the last 24 hours or less I've spent more time dwelling on the JFK assassination than I have in years.

And I'm done. You can have the last word, snipe, or whatever.

if you are interested in understanding the issue, basically Madelaine Brown will cover
everything for you --

If you want other info, the other sources I gave you make other issues/details clear --

and it looks like not getting that point indicates a communications problem from the outset.

Re this --

So you recommend the McClellan book but not the Caro book, which is considered
the definitive biography of LBJ.

Yes . . .
I'm familiar with Caro and the books he wrote --
As I said, Caro began to write the truth about LBJ's early years --
not the most truth of it, but hinting and what he and John Connolly really were.
Caro got very close to Ladybird Johnson -- too close, IMO, to write the whole truth.
Further, it probably would have been dangerous for him because he is a notable author.

Meanwhile, Barr McClellan's book comes from personal experience with LBJ and his personal
affairs.

And one movie and three books which you admit do not directly implicate LBJ.And a youtube video.

I recommended this information because it gives you an overall view of the plot -- something
quite important to be able to understand the workings of . . . if you are really interested.

The YouTube video by Madelaine Brown is indispensible to understanding the overall workings and
motives. Presumably, you're aware of the usefulness of YouTube? If not, I'd suggest you begin
to experience it.

Again . . . you seem to have a narrow perspective on information . . .

Once again, the A&E/History Channel documentaries cover several different theories about the JFK assassination,a real scattershot approach.

The A&E/History Channel was giving you an awareness of what ALL of the thinking was surrounding
the assassination. You may desire only to be pointed to some absolute truth, but things don't
happen that way. You're better off understanding ALL the available information.

Re this . . .

Look -- again -- you're going to make your choice to either do the work and know more about this
or not. However, LBJ was thoroughly corrupt in a MURDEROUS way . . . before the JFK assassination.
Malcolm Wallace was his private hit man. "Who's Malcolm Wallace?" See the Madelaine Brown video.

Unfortunately, the elites and Mafia are strongly attached. When the wealthy want some bit of
corrupt work done they don't turn to a Jr. Executive to carry it out for them. They turn to
those working in organized crime -- experienced hands. They work "hand and glove" together.
The Mafia serves the elite.

Murchison and H. L. Hunt were part of capitalism which knows no bounds ---

And this . . .

There are many theories about the JFK assassination and you've obviously chosen yours. And put a lot of time and effort into it using spurious sources of information.

Most of the theories are melding. There are only minor differences between those who understand
the assassination as a coup on our government.

"Spurious" . . . ??? I presume you know that means "not genuine/not authentic or true,
counterfit, illegitimate . . ???

Which in regard to the information I've given you is naive . . . puerile.

and re this . . .

In the last 24 hours or less I've spent more time dwelling on the JFK assassination than I have in years.

And I'm done. You can have the last word, snipe, or whatever.

I don't get the idea that you're very advanced in years . . .

but you should never be "done" working the gray matter ---

and why would you expect some war over a "last word, snipe, or whatever" ---

I thought of that photo shortly after McSame's choice was announced. The odds of McSame not completing his whole first term are 33% at best, according to my math wiz MD pal. He believes the shadow government wants a real DOOFUS to 'succeed' McSame.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 01:25 PM by defendandprotect
because the question has indeed been raised as to whether FDR was being poisoned

in his last days ---

Again, my advice is always to keep a VP to the LEFT of you ---

FDR had switched VP's from highly progressive Henry Wallace -- who the right hated ---

to Truman ....

They wouldn't have killed FDR to get Wallace --- believe me!!!

So . . . we have to constantly be questioning the propaganda of white male history!

LBJ engineered this photo op. Vice Presidents are usually not sworn in like this. They are supposed to take charge until another President is selected through a special election - but that never happens.

20. wrong. Vice President is sworn in as fast as possible when President dies
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 04:52 PM by yellowdogintexas
however it happens and serves the remainder of the term. Truman, Coolidge, T Roosevelt, etc. all succeeded immediately. When Nixon resigned, Ford was sworn in immediately.

it is very specific that the Vice President immediately succeeds and if both die together, Speaker of the House takes over.

After JFK died, the mechanisms were put in place to allow a sitting president who had no VP to nominate a VP who had to be approved by Congress, so there would be a sitting VP if something happened. This is how Gerald Ford became Vice President and then President.

This was put into law after JFK died because LBJ had already had a couple of heart attacks and there were concerns.

And the tens of thousands of Americans that died with him in charge and the millions of

Just because he may pan out better than the other choice, many Americans can never forgive

26. I totally understand, but I think that's not the point the OP was making
Regardless what we -- and history -- may think of LBJ, he had to be reasonably ready to fill JFK's shoes in the event of the president's death.

For most of our presidents since JFK, assassination is a much more likely premature ending to a term than natural causes. But with John McCain, age and prior health issues have to be taken into serious consideration, as well as the ever-present threat of assassination.

Johnson's experience in the Senate had given him the means to govern, if not well at least with some facility.

Sarah Pain (sic) has none of that. She has no base of support, she has no governing infrastructure. She has only the party to fall back on, and given her history, it is likely that she will turn not to the party but to her ideological soulmates in her fudnamentalist church.

Be afraid, my friends, be very afraid of Sarah Pain.

Seems like politicians only get one chance to do that. The hell of it is was that it was pure political cowardice. LBJ knew very well that the war was a bad idea--he was worried about being tagged as "soft on defense" with the result of having all the Great Society programs fail.

Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 01:34 PM by defendandprotect
that it was his passage of the Civil Rights Act which got him pushed out of the White

House by those in control of the country --- and not the VN war ---

Notice that Nixon only heightened the war to even greater protests ---

so . . . I'm giving this other theory some thought.

I'm also rethinking the Humphrey loss to Nixon . . . I don't think I believe that

any longer, either ---

After the coup in '63, the large computer counters used by the MSM to tally the votes

began to come on line ---

http://www.constitution.org/vote/votescam__.htm

I doubt that they would have run a coup and then left us with honest elections!

was part of the leadership for this coup on JFK/our government --- !!!

And if you really THINK about it . . . yes, it is fantastically important who you select

as your VP ---

Had JFK not been forced to take LBJ on the ticket, had he had someone to the LEFT of him

as VP . . . the coup might not have been carried out.

Which is why I keep stressing that Obama should have had someone to the LEFT of him ---

not someone to the RIGHT . . . like Biden.

In CA, health care activists have been sufficiently well organized to get universal health care passed twice. A good example for all issue activists.

---but I'm not familiar with how the activists are organized -- but that would probably

be good to know for whatever anyone is trying to do on any issue.

HOWEVER, let's look simply at what DU is doing here in raising money for Obama ---

presumably there's pressure being the group's name . . . on the other hand -- again --

we have money being turned over without any strings attached.

That's not the way capitalists/lobbyists do business --

But again, what happened after '06 . . . ???

52. Are you trying to make him out as some kind of saint?
This is the man who lied to escalate the Vietnam War. Part of being a wolf in sheep's clothing is looking like a good person, which in LBJ's case was the result of the fact that he did a lot of good things. But you can't look at a US President, or any politician for that matter, as some one-dimensional paragon of goodness.

None of them are perfect, which is why we can never stop questioning our leaders. Maybe you don't think lying our way into a needless war is that big of a deal, but I think if you're making a list of serious crimes against humanity in the last 50 years, that one shows up, no question.

157. Obviously, LBJ did not pull off a coup on his own . . . many were involved . . .
and it may have been LBJ's later PROGRESSIVE acts which caused those in control of the

nation to move him out of office, rather than the VN war which has always been supposed.

????

That doesn't change the overall corruption of LBJ on other issues of government ---

nor does it relieve him of what I certainly think was his involvement in the coup on JFK

and his long term cover-up of that assassination . . .

though in his final days he seems to have been haunted by conscience -- ????

What you use is what they gave you.... Palin and her husband... and John McCain for his error in justement.

The founder of the Alaska Independence Party -- a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years -- once professed his "hatred for the American government" and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag."

The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991, in an interview that's now housed at the Oral History Program in the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP

87. Look long and hard...
In Oct. 1960, I was 4 years old. My family attended a rally
for JFK. My grandmother pushed her way to the front, carrying
me--she handed me to Kennedy, and he held me and kissed my
forehead. I always say that is the day I was baptized a
Democrat.

On that horrible day in 1963, I came home from school and
found my Mom in front of the TV, crying. I asked her if that
was the man that kissed me, she just said "oh Sissy"
and sat me down with her.

My brother came storming in shouting "Somebody shot the
President", my Dad came home and set his lunch can beside
his chair and sat down--didn't even ask for supper.

My Grandmother came in--sat down, then an Aunt and Uncle with
their kids. My whole family--and countless neighbors and
friends--spent the next week in a state of stunned shock at
the loss of this beloved leader. BUT, WE DID NOT WORRY FOR
THE CONTINUATION OF OUR GOVERNMENT.

Lyndon Johnson was not JFK, but he was absolutely capable of
stepping into the job. Seeing him on the plane with a solemn
look, with Jackie next to him (still in her blood-stained pink
suit), allowed us to mourn the loss, without having to worry
about the running of the country.

There is NO WAY this VP pick is up to the job. I am stunned
when I hear it said that she battled the
"good-ole-boy" network, because she IS of the
"good-ole-boy" network--she is their IDEAL of
womanhood--an ex-beauty queen who can shoot a moose in the
face.

I AM afraid--very afraid--I hope the machines aren't fixed--I
don't think I can handle another Pres. election where I
watched the election stolen in front of us on national TV.

I'm sorry about the length of this--I have not posted in a
long time, but--oh yeah, I read you guys!

It is an unfortunate fact that assassination attempts are very

Lyndon Johnson ALSO had no meaningful foreign policy experience, and little interest in or empathy with the rest of the world, when the Coup of '63 thrust him into the presidency.

As a result, the Alliance for Progress was abandoned in favor of a Latin American policy based solely on alliances with military dictators, the Marines were sent in to destroy democracy in the Dominican Republic, and oh, there was this little country in Southeast Asia where we escalated a war that our foreign policy experts already knew was unwinnable.

134. cheap stunt!
Indeed! You have nailed it! This is the big picture...bottom line.

It doesn't matter if Palin were sworn in months after McCain dies of old age. She is still a fundie nut who thinks global warming and evolution are not real. She thinks "abstinence only" works...even though her daughter is in high school and pregnant. She thinks anything she does for Big Oil is good....anything. She thinks when she's in charge she can do as she pleases, firing people and hiring cronies that will do her personal bidding. She, like most Repugs, cannot THINK to the end of the sentence. She can only offer knee jerk reactions, like some animal in a lab. Like Bush has for 8 years.

Here's a take on the big picture:

McCain-McCain’s Polyp ‘08
Putting Country First!

A well-functioning empire would produce presidential and vice-presidential candidates for both parties who (1) are experienced in running the empire, and (2) operate predictably within a narrow framework. And indeed, the US empire used to be like that. Eisenhower-Nixon gave way to Kennedy-LBJ. When Goldwater captured the nomination in 1964 with some real psycho vibes, the liberal imperial mainstream could easily crush him—because the empire, then at its height, had the breathing room to offer lots of inducements to regular Americans. Then it was back to Nixon, a competent imperial manager.

The ascendancy of Reagan, who was just slightly less insane than Goldwater, indicated the system was under stress. Still, he was surrounded by people like George H.W. Bush and James Baker, who kept him from going off the deep end. Bush-Quayle and Clinton-Gore supervised a period of needed imperial retrenchment.

But over the past eight years, things have truly gone off the rails. In previous times, destructive nutjobs like Cheney might have been in the room when decisions were made, but they certainly never had the final word. Yet there he is, cackling with glee as he sets fire to one after another of the empire’s supporting columns. And the sane imperial managers haven’t been able to do anything about it.

The failure of the sane imperial managers—*cough* Kerry *cough* New York Times—isn’t due to their own personal faults. It’s because there’s much less slack in the system than there used to be. The empire no longer has the means to keep itself running in a rational way while simultaneously buying lots of people off.

Bush-Cheney have screwed up so badly there might be one last, small opening for sane managers like Obama-Biden. “Vote for us, and we’ll give you a better-run empire, and, and…gay marriage!” However, while there is a long-term constituency for this, it’s a pretty small one.

So before long, there will only be two options for the people who want to run things. First, they could organize a rational liquidation of much of the empire, which would free up enough resources to create a long-term winning coalition. Second, they could go completely bugfuck nuts, and try to maintain the empire while cutting back on all social benefits and counting on the thrills of military triumph and chialism to keep them in power. What won’t be possible is the Obama-Biden approach.

In other words, the days of a rational American empire are drawing to a close. We’ll be forced to discard either the empire part, or the rational part. And based on 10,000 years of human history, I’m guessing it’s the rational part that will go.

Whether McCain wins or not, Sarah Palin is a harbinger of the future. The fact there was no one able to prevent McCain from choosing such an obviously inadequate imperial manager, and choosing her in such a bizarre, panicked way, indicates that—as during the decline of Rome, or the last years of Saddam’s regime—everyone sane has already been eliminated from the power structure. And thus we’re left with nothing but the whim of whoever’s clambered to the top of the Crazy Pole.

Welcome to the Terrordome!

140. If LBJ led the coup, what would the Alaskan Separatist Do?
It would be like Jefferson Davis as the VP and then succeeding Lincoln and reconstituing the Confederacy, not just in the South but the whole nation. Putin and the Chinese, let alone religious extremists taking advantage of termoil in the US. How reckless of McCain! One Nation Under God - John! Country First, John! Please go back to Sedona, or one your homes, if you can find them. Try the googles!

141. Republicans aren't worried
That Palin might have to take over at a moment's notice. Her thinking will be directed just as Bush's has been for the last eight years. No problem.

142. What would be more horrible
if it were Nancy Pelosi with her hand on the Bible. That might not too too much of a stretch with Karl Rove still out there doing his murderous deeds.

145. This scene has been reenacted 9X in our nation's history
Including Nixon, who did not die in office but resigned, the vice-president has been called upon to serve 9 times in America's history. For those who think that contemplating this is macabre or morbid- remember- this is precisely what electing a vice-president is about.

156. Yeah, that's the damn truth! My dad knew LBJ, at least a little, and while he
wasn't perfect, to paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen's famous 'you're no Jack Kennedy' remark to Quayle, Sara Palin ain't no Lyndon Baines Johnson! Or Joe Biden, or Al Gore (can you even imagine comparing her to these guys?!?) or any number of other good VPs.
