A Message to the Religious Right
It's the sort of large-scale checkmate that I (and those like me) have been praying to my non-existent gods for since the first time I ever dared question the story of The Creation. Since I looked up at mom and dad and said: "But where were the dinosaurs in the Bible? And didn't Eve have to have a whole lot more babies than just Cain and Abel if there were all those people around when Cain killed his brother? And how come God let Lot throw his daughter out to the rapists in Sodom? And why would God create gay people if it was a sin? Isn't that just kind of mean?" And then later, once I developed the vocabulary to ask: "Isn't the idea that God is displeased with his creations and must destroy them a contradiction to his omniscience?"

Well, whatever. It all comes down to the same. If you have been a fan of tracking and observing the direct hypocrisies and outright lies perpetuated by the Christian fundamentalist wackos who hold prisoner the Republican Party, and find yourself disturbed by the fact that elections have been swung by voters who believe that Adam and Eve should be mentioned in the same breath as Charles Darwin, then you should be absolutely thrilled by the chain of events that have occurred since Friday, when John McCain selected Sarah Palin to be his running mate.

After all, she who would make abortion illegal, she who would eliminate birth control, she who would rely on the tenets of her own faith to guide the actions of her young daughter has been "Larry Craiged." In other words, she has a hell of a time practicing what she preaches, or at least ensuring that her kids are. After all, to people like her, to those who follow and proclaim her a HERO to their most righteous of causes, it should be EASY to raise one's own family to walk the way of The Lord! To not fornicate before marriage, let alone be with CHILD!

And what of this woman's supporters? Those "family values" crackpots that most recently have excoriated the likes of Jamie Lynn Spears for her wanton ways are now "praying" for Bristol Palin, praising Sarah for raising her daughter right.

And what of those people like Dr. Laura? The conservative talk show radio host who has made a living off of her outright hatred for "selfish" women who take time away from their children to return to work? What does she have to say about someone like Sarah Palin, who is leaving the care of her children to others while she takes a job offering national prestige? No comment.

Oh yes, ladies and gentleman. What we are seeing here is the monster looking at itself and not liking what it sees. The "Moral Majority" wing of America is in the midst of the sort of self-revelation that no amount of spin or cognitive dissonance will remedy. The Leviathan that has maintained a chokehold on a political party has been run through with its own sword, and its lifeblood of righteous credibility is bleeding out before us as we look on without sympathy. Does Abstinence Only education work? NO! Are you somehow more blessed and righteous than we? NO!

To those who identify with the Christian idealogue line of thought, simply calling yourself a "sinner like everyone else" when you or one of yours is revealed to be a fuck-up after you build a reputation off of being on the right hand of God Himself, is NOT going to work this time. It's time to step down off your high-horse of idolatry, hypocrisy, and hatred. To look into the mirror, and be turned to stone for the Medusas you are. You, the vocal minority of otherwise lucid, hard-working, Christian Americans have been exposed once again, in a way that no one with a working brain and a ballot in hand come November will be able to deny this time.

You no longer have a voice. You no longer have the right to decide, to demand who should lead us. You are dead. You have shuffled this mortal coil. You have ceased to be. You have choked on your own Kool-Aid. You have been cast into perdition.

And to that I say:

Thank GOD!

3. Its not the looking at itself that is causing the shift
Its the realization that they are being played by the GOP. The GOP died after Nixon. Based on the core values of the Republican platform at the time they simply did not and could not win an election. That changed in the 80s when Reagan showed up. At first he was more of the same. But then NeoCon activists caught the eye of the fundamentalists and convinced them that they had to wake up and take part in the politics that they had till then avoided. It didn't matter that many of the NeoCons did not share in the fundamentalist beliefs. All that matters is that they adhered to a fixed sense of morality and that they could be used as a tool to boost the GOP's voting pool.

The religious right has been used by the GOP. Without them they would not have won a single election for the last 2 decades. With them they have become a dominant force in our politics. So much so that they even dragged the Democratic party to the right. But the truth is becoming evident to the fundamentalists that put their faith first. They are being played. 2 decades of dominance and they are still losing ground on issues and have not had a success in doing away with the issues that drive them. They are tired of being used by political systems and seeing nothing in return. So they are going back to sleep.

The single best thing we can do is help send them on their way back to sleep by showing them how faith and politics do not mix. There is a reason this is a secular nation. And it has nothing to do with turning the countries back on God. It has everything to do with the recognition of the importance of freedom and a means of governing those who are free. Freedom protects belief. Including fundamentalist belief. The dilution of that freedom dilutes their freedom as well. Even if a theocracy takes hold it will only present a narrow view of theocratic belief. Countless theists will find themselves being told what to believe in such a system. And they will not abide that any more than we atheists do.

So send them back to sleep. Point out the manipulation of the GOP trying to keep them in line. Talk about how they fail to connect when the chips are down. Show them that religion is just pandering to the core of the GOP. And they will slide back into the backdrop of American politics.
