Can someone fill me in on the words 'vet' or 'vette'. Where did the terms come from?

Can someone fill me in on the words 'vet' or 'vette'. Where did the terms come from?
They seem to apply to a search. Goggle is no help. Neither is the dictionary.

4. Horse racing.
Before each race, the horse were required to pass an inspection by a veterinarian. Therefor, with this inspection completed & passed the horse was said to have been "vetted".

9. So, how come this word ends up supposedly as a SOP word-
that's Standard Operational Procedure. Who makes these words up and now everyone is using it.

10. It's short for "veterinarian" - Palin didn't get her rabies and distemper shots

...and she's also at risk from heartworms.

If she doesn't get "vetted" soon, they may have to put her down.

15. Actually, it comes from the 70's.
Back then, you'd get someone drunk, take them out in your Corvette, drive really fast and tell them you'll only stop if they tell you all their secrets. By the end of the "vetting process" you'd know all about them.
