WLS-AM just read a statement from McCain campaign denying Palin affair. . .
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 04:36 PM by wndycty
. . .which is slated to be on the cover of the National Enquirer tomorrow. Remember the Enquirer broke the Edwards story.

From CBS:
-snip-
(ST. PAUL, MINN.) – John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

The Enquirer also alleges that Palin unjustly fired a public safety official while she was governor of Alaska, but the story is based entirely on unnamed sources. The Enquirer has also paid sources in the past to speak with them, something mainstream media outlets do not do.

I grew up in NW Indiana and always had a radio tuned to WLS or WCFL - back when they were top 40 in the early to mid 60s. I remember sneaking a transistor under my pillow to hear Dick Biondi's 3 most requested songs at 10 pm - after I was suppose to be asleep.

Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” said Schmidt.

This was posted yesterday - the NE had the story of the daughter's pregnancy and was going to break it. Apparently the family was trying to keep it under wraps and have a quiet shotgun wedding after the convention.

oops, looks like all this hit the fan while I was typing. Man, it is hard to keep up with this.

27. "Another Incredible Allegation" — What The Enquirer Is Saying About Palin
Concerning the allegations in the new National Enquirer of an extramarital affair involving Sarah Palin, I called the tabloid this afternoon and asked for a copy of the new story. They obliged, and here is the portion of the story dealing with the alleged affair:

Another incredible allegation emerging from the family war is that Palin, a mother of five, had an affair with a former business associate of her fisherman husband, Todd.

“Todd discovered the affair and quickly dissolved his friendship and his business associations with the guy,” charges an enemy. “Many people in Alaska are talking about the rumor and say Todd swept it under the rug.”

I doubt it's true...then again, I didn't think the Edwards story was true either. And I guess they can't' call the National Enquirer the liberal media, since they scooped the elites on the Edwards scam. Still, these gossipy stories distract from the scandal about Palin that is right beneath our eyes (lying about bridge to nowhere, earmarks, troopergate, etc).

John McCain knows everything (and everyone) that Sarah Palin has done???

How stupid is he???

Plus, McCain's lawsuit is a bunch of hot air. He's trying to look like
Mr. Tough Guy who is outraged. Outraged, I tell you!!!

Palin is a public figure. The McCain camp would have to prove
that the allegation is false. They'd also have to prove that the
National Enquirer knew that the allegation was false, and that they
intentionally publishes it to harm Palin.

No way in hell McCain can prove any of that--even if he wanted.

He just has to act reallly, reallly outraged, and make his outrage
bigger than the story.

The item below is part of an anonymous post from July, so I take no responsibility for it -- except that Richter seems likely to be the person referred to in the Enquirer story. John Bitney is the guy who Palin forced out of his job because he was dating Todd Palin's friend's ex-wife.
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/shadow_governor

The Palins decided to go after Bitney because Scott Richter, Todd's friend and Sarah's ex-boyfriend asked them to. Richter is also a business partner with the Palins in investment property in the Mat-Su Valley. The Palins and Scott Richter would not let it go after John Bitney was hired by Rep. Harris. Richter wanted him fired from his new job and the Palins tried to apply pressure to make this happen.

On edit: There was also a very odd post at Free Republic yesterday. I'm not sure whether I can link to it without getting deleted, but I'm damn well going to quote it because I suspect it's going to get wiped over there. Someone posting as "An American in Dairyland" wrote, "Also, Todd Palin was technically not Sarah’s first or maybe I should say her only Dude. The press or a blog mentioned a former boyfriend of hers by the name of Scott Richter. There could, I suppose, be another scandal brewing relative to him and his ex-wife, Debbie as well. It all depends how far back the liberals want to dig."

Am I misreading, or is than an open invitation for liberals to start digging?

On second edit: Debbie Richter was the married woman with whom John Bitney was allegedly having the affair. That's on the page at andrewhalcro.com linked above. This is all far more soap opera than I can readily handle.

Going after someone because he dated husband Todd's friend's soon to be ex-wife?

Junior high in a small town.

Has Ms. Palin done anything that would qualify for recall or impeachment in Alaska?

This kind of thing is much worse than the purely personal problems of adultery, teen pregnancy and teenage vandalism.

122. EGG-zactly.
Remember, they had months to vet potential candidates and pick one. Now they would have even LESS time to do that -- they would have to make it quick so as not to waste time!

119. The blinded by the right crowd
May excuse a teenage girl for her "errors" but they will never forgive a raising christian star for screwing around on her husband. If this is true - and it very likely is - this could spell disaster for Yukon Barbi

120. Methinks this is a gift to McCain. He can now use this to get her
off his ticket. Even the Fundies won't cry foul. And poor John, he'll look like a man deceived by a wanton woman.

124. Er... hasn't the McCain campaign just promoted the rumor with this?
I mean, they're gonna get people talking... even if the right wing talking heads are defending her. Surely they don't want yet another Palin scandal m(real or imagined) to dominate the airwaves do they?

so that makes it all okay now. Give the guy a break.

138. Is this even possible? How on earth does a 44 year old mother of
5 (or 4, or whatever) kids possibly have the energy to wreak this much havoc? I didn't manage to create this much total chaos back in the '70s as a teen and early 20s hormonal idiot! (and not for lack of trying)

surely at this point a meth lab or something is just bound to turn up....

waits....
waits....
waits....
.....
....
....
....

darn

maybe tomorrow

(truly weird - soap operas and this kind of trash have always turned me off cold, but this is starting to be strangely fascinating)

146. I'm guessing her mother is the full-time caretaker of these kids
It's something no one is talking about. If the father truly is a stay at home Dad, that's great, but I doubt it. Now the Mom will be charged with caring for the great-grand baby too.

147. As I keep saying, the blogosphere doesn't need to mess with this
Leave it to the Enquirer and just spread the links. They are really careful about lawsuits, and their audience is the low information voter.

And can anything be more hypocritical than this statement coming from the Repugnants?

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

Remember Dan Rather. By disproving this, they're hoping to wash away all the other (much more substantiated) stories in a flood of sympathy and distaste for the media.

170. ok this is Sarah's affair only. I've also read on some Alaskan blogs that
Mr. Todd was also guilty of the same things.

The blog I read (gonna paraphrase) said it was akin to a John Edwards+.

There's more coming, I'm sure of it.

172. The Enquirer plays down...and VERY dirty...
:hide::yoiks:
...but they usually have their ducks in a row before they start slinging mud at the big names.
Lawsuits can be very expensive at that level, and sometimes the publicity just is not worth it.

They may weasel-word and imply...but anything they state categorically you can pretty much bet they've checked out.

I suppose they use this new process called 'vetting' in deciding which information is good to go with. SNARK

173. The fact that they are taking legal action...
and trying to preempt this with a press release means that it is probably true.

I don't remember seeing myself, but maybe read about here or somewhere else, but weren't the tabs saying the same thing about our candidate a few months ago? And what was his reponse? To ignore it for the ridiculous lie it was.

Me thinks the McCain folks doth protest too much!
