McCain stated to Gibson that his executive experience by virtue of his position as a Navy commander
makes him qualified.

How long was he a Navy commander and when? And how many under his command?

At least I thought I heard McCain told Gibson.

2. For about a year.
It was a noncombat unit.
"In the end, McCain and his superiors both seemed to conclude that his skills were better suited to a politician than a Navy admiral. His command of VA-174 was his last assignment with a squadron or fleet, the beginning of the end of his Navy career.

"The Navy turned down McCain's request for a higher command after VA-174, according to a former senior commander."
