He is saying that reporters will find things that the vetting did not and it is their right and duty to publish it..

He used as an example the fact that Eagleton had electroshock therapy. The vetting did not find it, but a reporter did.

It appeared to me that he was standing up for the media's right to publish whatever it finds out about Palin.

He was simply awful in 2004, but has developed a sense of objectivity this go-round.
