55. Whatever ........ McCain .... might die of fricking cancer if elected
Spare me your humorless posts and pandy ass support of our party

Since John McCain announced Friday that first-term Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be his running mate, Democrats have been quick to point out that the 44-year-old governor could soon be just “a heartbeat away from the presidency.” The veiled reference to McCain’s advanced age is hard to miss.

It’s a macabre point to raise on the night when Palin will speak to the convention here — but a look at the actuarial tables insurance companies use to evaluate customers shows that it’s not an irrelevant one. According to these statistics, there is a roughly 1 in 3 chance that a 72-year-old man will not reach the age of 80, which is how old McCain would be at the end of a second presidential term. And that doesn’t factor in individual medical history, such as McCain’s battles with potentially lethal skin cancer.

“For a man, that’s above the expected lifetime at the present,” said Michael Powers, a professor of risk management and insurance at Temple University’s Fox School of Business.

The odds of a 72-year-old man living four more years, or one full White House term, are better. But for a man who has lived 72 years and 67 days (McCain’s age on Election Day this year), there is between a 14.2 and 15.1 percent chance of dying before Inauguration Day 2013, according to the Social Security Administration’s 2004 actuarial tables and the authoritative 2001 mortality statistics assembled by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Going by the Social Security Administration’s tables, that’s nearly ten times the likelihood that a man aged 47 years and 92 days (Barack Obama’s age on Election Day this year) will die before Jan. 20, 2013. >>>

27. It took a few lawsuits to knock some sense into them about liability
and now, they are extremely careful and knowledgeable about how they run with stories. They tend to have their ducks in order, and all the i's dotted regarding what they print.

It is still the National Enquirer, gossip rag par excellence - but for the most part, they run with the truth, and sometimes can be a useful social justice tool of a different stripe.

The magazine just mentions an affair that nearly destroyed her career. I wasn't sure if they were referring to her own affair or her daughter's relationship with the young man (unless the word "affair" is strictly used to describe marital adultery - I'm not sure).

68. Different Scott Richter -- but it ties into another Palin abuse of power
Scott Richter's estranged (now ex-) wife Debbie Richter was having an affair with Palin advisor John Bitney when Palin got Bitney shoved out of his job. It's Palin's other major abuse-of-power incident besides Troopergate -- but the version of the story that came out a few days ago (and was discussed here) said she did it because Scott Richter was a friend of Todd's. Now it seems like the real story is something rather different.

See, for example, http://www.andrewhalcro.com/shadow_governor:

Consider the story of one of Governor Palin's former trusted advisors, John Bitney. Bitney grew up with the governor, often telling the story of being in the same band class. He served as her Issues Coordinator during her successful gubernatorial campaign in 2006, spokesman for her transition team after the election and on December 1, 2006 he was named her Legislative Liaison. ...

In June of 2007, it became known that Bitney was dating the soon to be ex-wife of Todd Palin's good friend. Palin reportedly began demanding that Bitney be fired. After a short time, Bitney realized that he couldn't remain in the governor's office due to the constant pressure and he worked out a deal with Chief of Staff Mike Tibbles to take a transfer to another department.

On July 3, Bitney was in the process of driving his vehicle back to Juneau when he couldn't get his state issued Blackberry to work. When he arrived in Tok he called his office and was told that his Blackberry had been turned off and that his name had been removed from the state employee directory.

His call was then transferred into Tibbles who told him the proposal they talked about was a no deal and the governor ordered him fired immediately. John Bitney was never given a reason why he was fired and never given a chance to make a graceful exit.

Scott and Todd were or are partners in a business, M**-Valley (can't remember the full name), but honestly, just try to find any information on them. Zip, nada, zilch. The closest I could find was a newspaper article and it was a 404, site not found.

Someone, somehow, is going to slip a lot more info to the Enquirer, we can count on it. As for now, I can't keep up with all the intrigue surrounding the Palins. They're a nonstop dime store novel.

That's a name that keeps coming up -- it seems to be where Wasilla is located. And it looks like Richter and the Palins owned a carwash together.

There seems to be more out there on Debbie/Deborah Richter than on Scott. Too late to go hunting now, though.

I can understand that there would not be thousands of references on the 'Net to Richter and Palin's business partnership, but there's an absolute dearth. The memory hole must be choking lately with everything shoved down its maw since Palin was chosen as McSame's running mate.

49. Now, I totally expected them to reveal that Sarah, too, was pregnant when she married.
That her oldest son, Track, was born less than 8 months after Sarah and Todd "eloped to save their parents' the expense of a fancy wedding."

Pre-marital pregnancy, it seems, runs in the family.

I learned right here on DU that: "Sarah Palin’s son was born on April 20, 1989. The Palins eloped and were married on August 29, 1988."

John McCain is nothing but an embarrassment to our country (just like W). His choice in running mate is being seen all over the world. He's a shameless bastard that puts "Politics First".

That nasty show that woman put on last night is disgusting and insulting. More of the same bs.

96. Info from tpmuckraker:
From http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com

The Palins also have a number of real estate holdings in Big Lake, AK co-owned by Debbie and Scott Richter. The properties are organied as “Richter Investments LLC.” The Richters also own a portion of the Palins residence in Wasila… (Assuming the Palins live rent free right now in the Governors’ Mansion in Juneau).

Interestingly, Debbie Richter was Palin’s campaign treasurer. Richter was awarded a job as the Director of the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend Division for her service. For those who don’t know, the State of Alaska gives its citizens “free money” checks every year out of this fund. This “free money” comes from oil royalties collected and investments. The Fund is currently worth $35 billion.

Would you choose the Governor’s campaign treasurer - and property co-owner - to honestly hand out oil royalties? Under her leadership in 2006, all Permanent Fund claims from residents (you have to make a claim for your check) were lost in a computer data entry failure…

______________
NOTE: We only found one property listed for Richter Investments:
http://www.matsugov.us/myproperty/detail.aspx?taxID=2357B04L012-1

The address for Richter Investments is the same as the Alaska Inaugural Committee:
PO Box 521591
Big Lake, Alaska 99652

Deborah Marie Richter is also certified as a pilot and uses the same address.
John Woodrow Bitney and Deborah Marie Richter of Juneau applied for a marriage license.

I may have to buy my very first issue of NE tomorrow. I will love to get NE all fired up so they will dig some more. If they make enough money on Palin stories, they will continue to portray her in later issues.
