TROOPERGATE JUST BLEW UP BIG! Troopergate e-mails from Sarah Palin.
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/new_emails_suggest_holes_in_pa.php

TPM link about WaPo publication:

"The Washington Post has obtained emails sent by Palin to then-Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, which show Palin complaining about the fact that trooper Jim Wooten -- who was embroiled in a family dispute with the Palins -- was still employed. The emails don't explicitly show Palin pressuring Monegan to fire Wooten -- but they do appear to undercut Palin's claim said that she only ever discussed Wooten with Monegan in the context of security concerns for her family.

Here's the Post's description of the key emails:
"This trooper is still out on the street, in fact he's been promoted," said the Feb. 7, 2007, e-mail sent from Palin's personal Yahoo account and written to give Monegan permission to speak on a violent-crime bill before the state legislature.
"It was a joke, the whole year long 'investigation' of him," the e-mail said. "This is the same trooper who's out there today telling people the new administration is going to destroy the trooper organization, and that he'd 'never work for that b****', Palin'.)"

105. abuse of power in a personal affair
her sister was married to the trooper, they were in a bitter divorce (custody IRRC) and Palin wanted her exBiL fired from his job.

blatant abuse of power.

When the Director guy refused, she fired HIM instead and put in a crony to do her bidding. The Union pitched a fit and the State AG had to investigate. the Investigation is ongoing.

..the crony had some troubles of his own...
Seems he was one of them damn foreigners...you know, Russian hands and Roman fingers?

http://www.adn.com/sarahpalin/story/510080.html

Palin's replacement for Monegan, Chuck Kopp, was forced to resign just two weeks after he was appointed because of a sexual harassment complaint that had been filed against him when he was the chief of police in Kenai.
Palin, in a news conference announcing Kopp's resignation July 24, said she was unaware that the Kenai city council had reprimanded Kopp as a result of the complaint and would not discuss how her staff had vetted Kopp before naming him to replace Monegan three days after Monegan was fired.

Ended up leaving two weeks later...with a $10,000 severance package.

Ooops.

Is it just me, or is this damn near criminal negligence in laissez-faire attitude toward vetting seem to be developing into a sort of theme here?

117. It isn't.
Wooten is a Republican alcoholic abusive thug cop who was beating the shit out of Palin's sister. So naturally Palin did what any sister here on DU would have done -- she tried to get him fired.

But on this sanctimonious forum, since Palin is running for VP, all of a sudden the Wooten asshole is an innocent saint. DU -- the forum that is against drunken cop wife-beating -- unless it might win us some political points in the presidential election. I have been lurking here for seven years, and I have never seen DU sink lower than it has this week by defending this scummy trooper.

BTW, the cop is just 35 and he has been divorced four times already. Does that give you a clue to his character?

126. Even Wooten Deserved Due Process
The fact that Wooten may be "a rotten molester and abuser" does confer on the Governor the power to administer arbitrary justice on behalf of her sister. There are better ways for her to have helped her sister than to throw the weight of her office abusively into the whole issue of the divorce.

131. I'm curious
"Wooten is a Republican alcoholic abusive thug cop who was beating the shit out of Palin's sister."

You state that as a fact. According to the Chief of Public Safety that lost his job, there were no negative allegations made nor complaints filled until the divorce became acrimonious and a custody battle ensued. That hardly seems like a basis for concluding that the man actually did what he is accused of. I'm not defending either side of the divorce case, but Palin's actions are unquestionably wrong. It meets the spirit of the definition of abuse of power at least, and possibly even the legal definition.

The issue is that the governor ordered the firing of a man who had just divorced her sister. It doesn't matter how much he deserved it, it's still an abuse of gubernatorial power.

custody battle still ongoing this physical abuse will be presented..but if severe as you say leaks would be specific. He'd have to have a very convincing lawyer.
Again no reports of her calling domestic disturbance, complaints or neighbors, or witnesses in public places.

but your facts don't hold water. No way she lied as much in a few minutes as Cheney has over the last 8 years - sorry, she may be awful but is nowhere near the Cheney league of pure evil. She does not seem to meet the Bush std. for awful - celebrating and promoting death and destruction. She's just a oil whore - and tool of the religious right, nothing more.

(Best Syndication News) New ethic’s complaint is being filed against Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin today before the end of the business day. The complaint outlines misconduct by the Gov. and her office staff alleging records where improperly made pubic.

John Cyr of Wasilla, Alaska the Executive Director of Public Safety Employees (PSEA) told the Laguna Journal that “our attorney Steve Sorenson of Juneau Alaska will file the compliant before the end of the business day today.” The grievances will include the illegal release of records of Alaska State Trooper Michael Wooten the former brother-in-law of the governor, according to Mr. Cyr.

101. No.
She's actually been very persuasive and has worked well with the Democrats in our state legislature (mainly because she had strong opposition in her own party), plus when I met her personally in 2006 when she was running for governor, she was quite charming, even knowing that I was supporting a progressive Democrat for the U.S. House seat. She was almost unrecognizable to me last night. Obviously she had been coached to be the attack dog. I kind of liked her personally, even while totally disagreeing with her politics, but she's lost me now. Too easily molded into what they want -- after she's played on her authenticity here.

McCain never should have come here -- we could have taken care of her ourselves.

What about heading up Stevens' 527. What about hiring lobbyists to get earmark money. What about the people she had fired in Wasilla. What about a $20 million debt. What about lying about the bridge, and lying about building bridges in Alaska without any federal help. What about opposing sex education. What about creationism in schools and believing parents should have 100% control over what their child learns in school. Why in the world would you think she should EVER be on the national stage. She's a lunatic.

Monegan is the one that was fired under false pretenses. You would be better qualified than I to judge what kind of a job that Monegan did, but from all accounts I've read he did a good job and her reasons for firing him were bogus. Wooten was the motive, not the crime.

She abused her power, she probably broke the law, and she has been lying about it ever since. I have been following this pretty closely since day one, like pretty much everyone else up here. And every where you turn there are people talking about what a sleazy dude Wooten is and how he shouldn't be a trooper. But that is just a distraction from the real issue at hand. That Sarah and Todd are just as sleazy as Wooten. I mean they are all from Wasilla, and I think the one thing I can agree with Ben Stevens on is the valley.

92. Coalition of the Clueless
Sarah can bring in the Wal-mart vote, the Christian fundie vote, the PUMA (should they really exist) vote, the anti-abortion fanatics, the gun vote and the "ain't she purty" vote. That's not counting the macho, racist vote that McCain already has.

All the wedge issue voters will flock to this ticket. Our only hope is that there are enough Independents and Republicans out there who recognize their own self-interests and finally realize that, unless they are very wealthy, they are going to be screwed again, economically and other ways not yet imagined, if they vote for these two puppets.

100. No real Dem will vote for her /McSame- PUMA or not
She is the antithesis of Democratic - she's more right wing than McCain. The person that is shilling for McCain was interviewed and guess what - she hasn't voted Dem since Clinton so calling herself a Democrat is bogus when she votes Repug all the time except once. I don't buy this whole story, it's bogus. I know a lot of Dem Hillary voters here in No. FL. and only 1 (a guy) who is not voting for Obama and he's sitting this one out. I'm not saying none will vote for McCain, but only the dem in name only, or a stubborn fool like my friend's husband mentioned above would do that.

They just got $10,000,000 from the Evangelical Fudies this week when she jumped on their boat.. i assumed that the money would be sent to Alaska to shut up, bribe and quiet any "issues" that weren't fully vetted.

But, I guess with Babygate, Troopergate, Bridge-to-Nowheregate, AIPgate, What-does-a-vice-president-dogate, Ice-Hockey-Rinkgate, Library-book-bangate, and the brand new AFFAIRGATE, Ten Million Dollars just doesn't buy Rove what it used to. I guess he forgot that the dollar has gone down in the past 4 years.. and he needs a bit more to cover up this mess.

Here's the WP link for those who need something in print:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/03/AR2008090303210_pf.html

The thing on her firing of the Wasilla police chief went over real good in my area, now, any proof of her attempts to screw with the Alaskan "trooper organization" should be like icing on the cake, to those in this red nook of wa. It won't matter anymore if she's ever found guilty of such actions, it's simply that she's fucking with "law and order" and right wing nuts do not like that.

The AIPgate discovery has been the biggest strike against her, so far, but her wrestling with the "blue wall" is making conservatives absolutely wingy-dingy. We just had a horrific shooting here, one deputy sheriff dead, a trooper shot, five other civilians murdered, three others shot or stabbed. I may just run off this WP article and get it around, in time for all the memorials. Practically half the troopers in this state were in my county today.

american citizen by printing these out and handing them out, we seriously cannot count on the media to ensure the truth becomes known by american citizens, its why they are attempting to bash the internet investigators once again....its pretty obvious they are attempting to once again threaten the media, they speak truth and then the next day it's like they have been switched by the notorious pod people brigade, but they cannot fight the ground forces no matter how hard they try...family, friends, strangers, its our duty to ensure they do not remain as ignorant as our government would love for them to remain.

She means she only now became aware that someone might perceive what she did as applying pressure. John McCain's defense in the Keating-5 incident was that he didn't understand that what he was doing was wrong. And everybody bought it because he just isn't all that bright.

121. This issue isn't worth the energy

Even though she may have abused her power, once people know what a sleaze Wooten is, they will think "good on her"! I myself am sitting on the fence about it. Maybe Moneghan deserved to get canned? Many people have a love/hate relationship about cops. Many feel their own police chiefs aren't doing a good job. When cops do well or they risk their lives or lose their lives in the line of duty they're sympathetic, when they themselves abuse their power, people hate them. I just can't automatically get enough empathy up for Moneghan myself. I dislike Palin intensely but I'd rather other issues involving her were focused on---her hypocrisy about "special needs" children for one amd the true story behind the "bridge to nowhere" for another.

135. Backfire - big time...
You do realize this is going to backfire - big time - right?

People won't care that she abused power, allegedly, all they'll care about is that she was protecting her sister from an abusive thug.

Can't wait to see this play out.

145. One thing for sure.
She has the Republican inclination to lie down pat. She would make a perfect replacement for W.

146. Palin Impeached?
My gosh. Is it possible that McCain/Palin will make Bush/Cheney look good, even to Democrats.
The Republicans have the worst people running in the History Of The World

150. The last I heard, she is now refusing to participate in the investigation
until the inquiry panel is replaced with her hand-picked cronies. Her equivalent to "executive privilege".
