GDP challenge! Name a town within 100 miles of you that has a population like Wasilla!
I'm defining comparable as between 6 and 10 thousand.

I'll start:

Shasta Lake City, California

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shasta_Lake,_California

Corning, California

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corning,_California

Willows, California

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willows,_California

Yreka, California

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yreka,_California

6. I live in one of the smallest suburbs - an exurb actually, of Chicago.
Our population is around 40K. We're so far out that it's a 110min commute by train (inc. 15 by car).

7. In Northwest Arkansas it's easy
as that size is considered "Large"

Hmm....

I think these might fall into that range:

Berryville AR

Eureka Springs AR

Yellville AR

Most towns around where I live are much smaller. My home county has a total population of around 6000.

51. Eureka Springs has about four times the brainpower as a Wasilla - a lot of good liberal people there
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 01:08 PM by democrat2thecore
At least, that was my impression when I was there. I ran into some of the most fascinating and well-educated people who had relocated to that neat little town.

On edit: Am I right? I'm curious if my perception was close to reality.

57. Like most of northwest Arkansas, Eureka Springs
is a strange combination of very progressive, enlightened folks living side by side with conservative nutcase loonies. There's a Sufi Center in Eureka, for example--but also the Passion Play and followers of Anita Bryant. I work at a non-profit health education foundation whose members tend to be very forward thinking, yet there are KKK and Neo-Nazi chapters around the same area. Same thing with Newton County, my home--very great progressive groups, environmentalists, solar power, organic farms--and the worst kind of prejudice, violence, etc.

A strange yet exhilarating place to live.

14. In Wyoming it would be easier...
to list the ones that aren't like Wasilla....

Or just draw a circle around the southeast corner of the state and say "anyplace except down there".

Of course, up here in Teton County you'd have to multiply Wasilla time minus 1 to get the politics right.
