Let's not add to her pain. And let us give credit where credit is due. Cindy McCain did a GOOD thing in adopting her. Cindy and John McCain, whatever politics they hold, still love their kids, just like anyone else. If there was one truly humanizing moment at the RNC it was when that guy got up to speak about how Cindy rescued these two baby girls, one of whom he adopted, the other one being Bridget. As Cindy listened to the speech she was literally moved to tears and could be seen holding Bridget's hand and hugging her.

Too bad they blew that Hallmark moment with the rest of the convention.

I noticed she was not on stage the other night with a young woman I assumed was her sister, and I thought it might be because she was not as telegenic, but later when the crowd was applauding the McCain family it looked like she had to be told to stand up and then to sit back down.

And it tells me one of two things.

1. They never completely adopted Bridget, so she doesn't share their last name, and they are too ashamed to admit it and post her real last name.

or

2. They are ashamed of Bridget and don't consider her a "McCain."

If A/P is really in the tank for McCain, I'd say that the captioning is to misdirect any image searches for "Bridget McCain." Too cynical?? Maybe, but also look at how they've positioned her in the photo, so as to be easily cropped out. I need a bath.

20. You know, I don't know why this keeps happening to this poor kid

but I will grant them this - I have seen older photos of John and esp. Cindy with Brigette when she was a baby, then a toddler, and then a young girl.

And Cindy looked at that kid with absolute happiness and a mom's love in her eyes.

I hate the McCains, btw, with a passion now. But that from what I saw, there was no mistaking how much at least Cindy loves that kid. Granted, a much younger Cindy, and it is hard to tell exactly how that relationship is now that B is off to collge and we are never allowed to see pictures. There was much talk about the rumor sent out during McCain's last campaign that Brigette was the product of an affair with a "black man", so she was an illegitimate black offspring and don't vote for a guy that did this.

Which is completely untrue, and sent McCain right through he rafters. Supposedly both McCains said it would be totally up to Brigette how involved she wanted to be in this process, given the hurt they all went through last time.

I was speaking of what upset or maybe had motivated the McCains in this regard. Which is not how the parents felt about it, but how the young girl did. Agree Brigette shouldn't feel it to be problem at all to be mistaken for being black, not brown.

But if you are a child, you might not have a full grasp on how to not feel sad and attacked, even though you know there should be no shame or stignma whatsoever to be mistaken for a black child. All you know is that some is trying to hurt you by slinging at you all the insults reserved for black children AND any child that is a product of an on the side love affair with one black participant and one white participant.

From a kid's point of view, the thing that we adults key on, ie that there should be no shame in being mistaken for an AA, is not even in the ballpark of what upset her about the whole thing. It is the sheer nastiness of that kind of inquiry, and the hurt.

I was a kid once, both a smart and sensitve one at that. I am not sure you could make me feel better about such personal attacks on me just by pointing how how backwards those people's ideas were. Shit like that hurts. I wouldn't have had the maturity to feel that was a distinction with a difference. I'd have listened, but not wanted to be any part of that kind of world.
