They existed solely as the party that got swept into power when lots and lots of people were really pissed at the Republicans. There was no such thing as a memorable sound bite, not for the positive. "...for it before I voted against it" and "stuck in Iraq" are what he's known for. Everything else was rambling road.

It's also why it was simple for me to predict Sarah Palin would be a hit during her speech. I watched her 2006 debates and got to know her style, which includes sound bite bursts. We may mock the eBay line but I guarantee it shows up in plenty of beauty parlors tomorrow.
