Listening to Palin's speech tonight, I cried. Not tears of joy, hope, or happiness. I cried because i am scared that her rhetoric will affect people's decisions about America's future. This speech was scarier than any movie, any war, and anything I can think of. If people believe this obvious pandering of ideologies, I pray we can get through these next four years. less

I have been watching this for days to determine how I should vote. Palin's speech has been the deciding factor for me. Aside from the issues, she has about as much experience as my next door neighbor. I can't believe she has the nerve to ignore the obvious and come out as if she isn't a bit aware of the fact that hardly anyone knows who she is and she hasn't earned the standing to be attacking other's experience. The only thing that I have seen that is similar is George Bush's complete obliviousness to the public view. Maybe like him, she only watches FOX news. I was hoping McCain would be more in tune to the American people. His judgement is a serious question. less

Wow, I'm extremely disappointed with Palin's speech. I was willing to give her a chance. despite the questions the press (rightly!) have been asking about her (being a complete unknown to most of us in the lower 48), but she didn't say a single thing to dissuade my gut feeling - this person is a truly frightening choice for the control of the US nuclear arsenal. 2. Much better. Yes, only thing about economy: Lie that Obama will raise your taxes.
Of course it's a total lie. She didn't really talk about people losing their jobs because of yet another Republican recession.

While Obama tried to find common ground, she tried to rip America apart.

10. It really helps to underline that the MSM and GOP is in some other world other than the real one.
It's just so weird-- the disconnect. I think that's what people have been waking up to and it makes them do different things-- some vote for Obama and turn democratic but I'm also noticing a lot of people going indie and/or for Ron Paul but yeah, hardly any for GOP.

This is fast becoming a rout. All those bought and paid for media talking heads were acting like it was the best speech ever. Then, in all of 30 minutes, it had fizzled out and McCrap was back in his pile of mediocrity. I made $300 on Intrade, thanks to those McCain suckers who bought the crap. Now, they'll spend all day tomorrow talking about what a nasty person Palin is and maybe that's why her family is so screwed up. McCain will make his speech, and people will make snarky remarks about how the VP had a better speechwriter than the Presidential candidate. It was a good day.

One comment after another stating just how nasty and divisive her speech was. Her speech was really disappointing and really showed the utter hatred that seethes through the Republican ranks. The speech left me disgusted. Reading these comments made me feel much better. Apparently many people aren't buying into right-wing fear and hatred this election season. Hallelujah!! 19. Welcome to DU! I'm evidently with a whole bunch of people who are thinking -
"gee, I thought it was just me..." after watching that speech. I was revolted by it. What a snot-nose. In junior high or high school, understandable, because that's the level this was. Totally unsavory and embarrassingly juvenile. Kinda gave me a minor sense of peace, though - to think that if enough Americans fall for this that they win or get close enough to steal again, then that tells you a LOT more about the electorate, which either willfully or negligently or gullibly swallowed it again, than it does about the candidates preferred. I would be proud NOT to be numbered among such a group. It'd be like a badge of honor!

15. For the last few hours, since I started reading those comments, I've been stunned.
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 06:27 AM by calimary
Truly stunned! I hesitate to grab this and run with it. It's just a single pool of voters - may not be representative of the whole universe.

Nevertheless, I learned from my local radio days that input from listeners was HIGHLY significant. First of all, why do you think they bother with a request line or click your favorite song and the like? Because they want the input. It tells 'em what you like and want, AND it tells 'em that you're there, to begin with. When they know you're there, the tendency is to assume that where there's smoke there's fire so maybe you're not the only one who wants this. A single letter (especially something on paper via snail mail) carries LOTS of weight. It's representative of multiples - depending on the market size. One equals 10, 100, 1,000, etc. They figure the fact that you meant this to such an extreme that you actually got off your apathy and wrote in about it - suggests that there may be that many more people who agree with you but, for whatever reason, did not write in about it. And if you get a few letters all saying similar things, that weighs heavily - especially such a laborious medium as pen-to-paper and stamp-and-envelope. Multiply it out and you start to get some startlingly impressive numbers - and it gets your attention. Emails and phone calls also, but a paper letter is tremendously significant, especially these days when everybody either phones or texts or sends email. Paul Begala once said 100 paper letters could change the course of a news program. This affected me personally - a single favorable mention of me in Arbitron's ARB Talkback (what it was called) saved my job for a year, through lots of office turbulence, otherwise sliding ratings, a serious house-cleaning, and many heads rolling out the door.

LONG and annoying way of saying (sorry about that!) I'm tempted to think that this is representative of a rather substantial audience pool. Not sure what the ratio is for CNN - active audience feedback versus passive audience. But if ONE of these is worth several multiples, or several hundred or thousand multiples, then this is ASTOUNDING. FOR Obama/Biden. When you compare how many pro-palin comments there were to how many anti-palin comments, it was mind-blowingly lopsided against palin and/or mcsame/palin.

I couldn't help myself. This link was like the proverbial book you can't put down. Gobbled up the whole thing - all the posts all the way to the end. I was deeply engrossed, mesmerized even. Just stunned by the magnitude of the reaction ("Shit! I couldn't have written all this stuff, and you know how strongly I feel about it!"). Same for the nature of the comments. Significant in many of these: that she is actively driving them away - in most cases toward Barack Obama, and with growing conviction. There is a secondary theme that keeps popping up, too - adverse to mcsame - the judgment thing for picking her and all that. But mainly toward her - many likened her to the snotty cheerleader or student body president in high school, not remotely ready to be VP. There were Dems, 'CONS, independents, many saying they came prepared to like her and to hear some positive ideas from her, to be impressed and uplifted. Instead, they got nothing but nasty. She seems to have made a bad first impression on quite a few people. It was very unbecoming. Some even said embarrassing. It's also a humdinger of an audience research report. This, too, is a public opinion poll, however unscientific.

Holy COW...

Just afraid to dare getting that hopeful. I've had two let-downs in a row. This will have been a LONG and VERY sickening eight years.

16. I just finished reading the first 75 responses to her speech and HOLY SHIT!
I believe I counted FOUR responses that could be considered positive and one of those I was not real sure of. Is the CNN comment board a bastion of liberals that I didn't know about or are people really turned off by her. One guy wrote that he didn't watch the speech, but his wife who was excited about voting for a woman did and came out saying that Palin was a bitch and she couldn't vote for her!!

It will be really interesting to see how this works out for them over the next ten weeks.

20. I've been trying to find somewhat neutral news sites to read the
responses and try to get a gauge on where the electorate might really be. If you only read liberal/progressive sites, it can set up a bubble. So I regularly check the comments sections on the major news sites and various newspapers. And from what I've seen on a quick trip around, the majority seem to reflect the comments on CNN. People found the Repukes to be nasty and mean, devoid of any substance.

Forget the talking heads...listen to the average person.

25. No kidding. I wrote my own piece and thought it was just me thinking this:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6922745

And then after I submitted it, I saw this thread and looked through the comments on the link. HOLY CANOLI. If this is the type of stuff people out in Voterland are saying, it may be what Jack Cafferty said the other day shortly after palin was formally introduced: "it may be Game Over." That day he'd asked something like - did viewers feel more like voting for mcsame with palin in there now, and first, he said they'd been snowed under with SIX THOUSAND emails. The way he described them sounded as though the vast majority thought the same way: that palin is a loser. He said what the viewers were saying was something the republi-CONS weren't going to like. The next hour he came back in the follow-up segment and said it was now ELEVEN THOUSAND emails, and the basic subject matter of them evidently was unchanged.

Then he read a bunch of them on air. Usually he tries to find a sampling of different opinions or opposing opinions. There wasn't ONE that was favorable toward palin. And that was last Friday afternoon. Before her story really got rolling.

I was reluctant to entertain such notions then. I still kinda am. But seems to me we may be seeing an unmistakable and consistent trend. Again, though, this is just the internet comment universe. Could be quite different in that all-important Bible Belt and it certainly was all raves all the time inside the convention hall. But outside? Hmmm... It's not a very good sign...

28. I felt better as soon as I heard
Palin's speech. Yes, she did a great job of appealing to the base. But the speech proved that McCain isn't trying to reach out to anyone other than the base. This convention will not bring moderates and independents to their ticket. I am very pleased with that.

29. heh... i barely read the articles anymore. i go straight to the comments
CNN, especially-

and don't be fooled: the people can see through the bullshit.

i make a game out of commenting on EVERYTHING, and seeing which ones actually make it through moderation.

my latest comment about palin's speech:

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which. –George Orwell, Animal Farm

let's see if they print it

33. I like what Bekabug said:
"I keep thinking we all have to live in this country after this election."

I think people are sick of all this political ugliness and poo-flinging. I was just reading yesterday that most of the time the more optimistic candidate wins the presidential election (and remember, after playing the nonoptimistic terra terra terra card, Bush didn't actually legitimately win in 2004)--it's probably not too much of a stretch to assume that this kind of ugliness plays well at conventions but not around the country.
