Barack Obama fights for the people, Sarah Palin fights for the powerful. And there's the difference between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin. (Cross-posted on my blog).
The Bagof Health and Politics's diary :: ::
Only a do-nothing, anti-intellectual secessionist could say what Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska said last night. For those of you that missed in Governor Sarah Palin said, "Being Mayor of a small town is like community organizing, except with responsibilities."
Let's talk about what Sarah Palin thought were her responsibilities when she was Mayor of Wasilla. Mayor Sarah Palin thought it was her responsibility to attend a meeting of an Alaskan Political Party that advocates secession from the United States. (As someone who lives less than twenty miles from Antietam National Battlefield...a place where 10,000 people died in 8 hours for the concept of our sacred union, how dare you use "country first," as a slogan Governor). Mayor Palin thought it was her responsibility to ban "offensive" books from the town's library. Mayor Palin thought it was her responsibility to threaten the librarian's employment when the librarian stood up for freedom to read, a principle that makes this country great. Mayor Palin thought it was her responsibility to fire the town's police chief for not being "fully supportive of the Mayor," in a political campaign. Mayor Sarah Palin was a small-time, small-town imitation of George W. Bush and everything that it wrong with his administration.
Meanwhile, Barack Obama was in Springfield, serving in the Illinois Senate, and following in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln. State Senator Obama used his power to push a tough ethics reform bill through a notoriously corrupt state house. State Senator Obama used his powerto expand access to health insurance in Illinois. Instead of trying to ban books, State Senator Obama fought to expand literacy programs in Illinois. Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has consistently fought to protect Illinois' environment, farmers and union workers.
If John McCain and Sarah Palin want a contrast between a diligent, effective State Senator who always put his community and country first, and petty my-way or the highway small town Mayor who always put her extremist ideology first, that's fine with me. I put country first, always. I don't attend secessionist meetings, or even videotape addresses praising the whack-jobs that think secession is a viable option. I put country first, I don't burn or ban books, I read them. I put my country first, I don't believe cronyism, I fight against every day.
Sarah Palin evidently doesn't put the country first. Her record indicates a person obsessed with her own power. A person who puts obtaining and exercising power ahead of what is good for the community and the country. We've had eight years of that with George W. Bush. We don't need four more years of it with John McCain and Sarah Palin. Eight is enough--actually, eight is more than enough.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the path to a better, more inclusive and freer America. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the path to an America where everyone has health insurance and is treated with dignity by the medical system. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the path to a sane, sensible withdraw of troops from Iraq, and a refocusing on the real threat--Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the path to middle class tax cuts, not more tax cuts for the rich cronies of John McCain and Sarah Palin. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the path to a future of cheaper energy for all; John McCain and Sarah Palin are the path to more record profits for big oil. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the path to a cleaner environment and a solution to the global warming crisis; Sarah Palin, global warming denier that she is, is a path to more of George W. Bush's failed environmental policies.
We have a clear choice in this election. In Barack Obama and Joe Biden we have two pragmatists who have firm understanding of the immense problems George W. Bush has caused. In John McCain and Sarah Palin we have extremist ideologues who are part of that 24 percent fringe that thinks George W. Bush is doing great job. We have a choice between change and more of the same. I'll stand with change this time. I'm going to vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
