They Shot Their Load Prematurely
So I watched the debacle last night, as did many. First, I'll say as much as I despise this man, Giuliani gave a good speech last night. Yeah, I know, he's disgusting and gives off the impression of a rabid rat. But, his execution was what it needed to be. He was a savage throwing factless attacks at Obama for nearly 25 minutes of a 30 minute rant. He talked enough policy in the last five minutes to give his bullshit some substance. And, he had a good delivery. The lowest common denominator loves that kind stupidity.

Then came along Palin. She didn't fall on her face. For all purposes, she proved she can walk and talk at the same time, sort of. HOORAY. The base is energized.

Here's the problem: it was all too good. John McCain will be lucky to even deliver half of a speech Ol' Rudy pulled for him the night before. It's going to be a snoozefest. And in order to rap this shit up in a box, he's going to need to not only attack Obama, the liberal demon, and act like the fundie he really isn't, he's also going to have to make the case to the moderates and indies who might be on the fence and need policy reassurance. And, it's got to be good.

There isn't enough time in the next 60 days to pull all that off, let alone in one night. They were able to demonize Kerry because they jumped on him before the nation even got to hear him speak. This isn't the case with Obama - he's already captivated the media and the audience. GW in 2004 had already a ground game in 2002 to sew up the base so he could reach out to independents and moderates for the greater part of the 2004. With Kerry already demonized, it was easy to pick off moderates because, as we all know, Kerry is the most liberal Senator ever and a complete flip flopper (nevermind those two contradict each other). Plus, fear tactics were still viable in the wake of 9-11, sad to say.

But this is 2008. Things are very different. This week is supposed to be McCain's party. It's not. I forgot he was even running judging by the orgasms everyone was having over Palin. How in the world is he going to be able to talk people into voting for him, but kind of voting for her, but really voting for him? That's a stretch. Furthermore, this Palin lady has yet to be challenged with real media face time. She seems about as stable as house built with a deck of cards. And now, they're going to have to rely on policy because making Obama into a monster is just not possible at this point. In fact, it may be completely impossible with how well Obama presents himself to the public.

After the last three days, there will be a Palin bump, no doubt. Some nutcases will fall in love with the Tundra Troll, but I think the whole sham has a ceiling. Too bad their team needs an opening that's not going to gain them yards, but yields them miles. They can attack the media now, but they're sure going to need them in the next 60 days. This is not 2004. The media needed the Republicans to get ratings back then. These days, the Republicans need the media for audience time. And even then, their audience might be thinking, I should have gone with Rudy, after watching him unleashed last night.

All the while, Obama and Biden have barely lifted a finger. The next couple weeks are going to be a blood bath once they start going at it and if last night is any indication of what's to come, Palin is going wish she stayed with the rest of elves in Santa's village. I can't wait.

3. good point about how the convention was supposed to be McCain's party (but isn't)!
If it's really true about the National Enquirer, etc, it's absolutely perfect to have the base charged up because of her and despite him.
