Michigan Independents react to Palin's speech

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080903/NEWS15/80904002

<snip>

“I was completely underwhelmed. She was a Republican novelty act with a sophomoric script. It was not even a speech I would expect for a someone running for the local PTA, much less for vice president.”

-- George Lentz, 66, Southfield independent

“Who is Sarah Palin? I'm sorry but I still don't know anymore about this young lady tonight than I did last night ... The way it looks to me, she's the Republican vice presidential nominee for one reason: because Hillary wasn't selected.”

-- Mike Kosh, 38, West Bloomfield independent

"Sarah Palin is a self-described ‘pitbull with lipstick.’ She spent little time helping Americans learn who she is. She is a cool, poised speaker, but her speech contained few statements about policy or the party platform. … I am not convinced that Palin's experience as a mayor or governor in Alaska meet the qualifications to be vice president much less one stroke or heart attack away from being commander in chief.”

-- Ilene Beninson, 52, Berkley independent

“Nothing worked for me. I found her barrage of snide remarksand distortions to be a major turn off. She is not a class act. The most important point she made is that she will be an effective attack dog.”

-- Jan Wheelock, 58, Royal Oak independent

“Sarah got as much applause as Hillary did, and had a friendly, appealing appearance.
Her delivery style reminded me of a high school valedictorian who also might have been a cheerleader. I thought she would appear more professional, more stateswomanly. She's no match for Joe Biden.”

-- Joellen Gilchrist, 64, Beverly Hills independent

3. Props to my fellow Michiganders.
We know what's up.

We recognize George Bush when we see him, even if he happens to be wearing lipstick and a skirt.

OMG...I know one of these people. Never knew they were an Independent. Thought they were Repub.
This is good. This is real good. I hope this is playing out all across America this morning!

20. All the republicans call themselves independents these days.
Either that or Libertarians. Can't blame them. I'd be trying to get the stink off too.

Like many here, I don't want the MSM's forced, Stockholm Snydrome-esque narrative about Palin's hatemongering speech to take hold. Thanks.

7. She'll save us from the lobbyists!
"She seems like a real fighter, someone who would stick it to the lobbyist and special-interest groups..."

Top quote, by a guy who may not know about her job running a soft-money group associated with Senator Ted Stevens and raising unlimited donations from corporations.

8. I'm surprised the independents were so tough.
Its similar to comments I got from a co-worker...we were watching to learn something about her and we still have no idea where she stands on anything. Unless she is going to be a tabula rasa filled with John McCain's positions (which he has to get from his aides anyway), we learned nothing from that speech.

10. The 'Pukes went personal on Obama last night and that's a BAD MOVE
when you're trying to win over Independents and other fence-rail sitters.

Plus, it only fires US up even more to crush the GOP like a bug come November.

14. She definitely did not appeal to the issues that most concern Independents/Unaffiliated Voters...
I thought I heard a few cringe last night as Palin launched into one partisan attack after another against Obama/Biden.

She obviously was not picked because she has strong, insightful, well-grounded opinions on the economy, the war, and other top issues.

The speech was a George W. Bush special --which was written by his backers, not by her.

for the last 8 years and that damn liar Palin and McBush will finish the job for king george if elected.

How any worker in the so-called rust belt states could vote for any rethuglican is beyond comprehension.
