Biden responds: I didn't hear the phrase middle class, health care, helping people get to college

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/04/Biden.Palin/index.html

(CNN) -- Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden praised his Republican counterpart's acceptance speech as "incredibly well-crafted and delivered," but said Sarah Palin's rhetoric lacked substance.
Democratic VP nominee Sen. Joe Biden says Palin spoke well, but said nothing about important issues.

"I didn't hear the phrase 'middle class.' I didn't hear a single word about health care. I didn't hear a single word about helping people get to college," Biden, a U.S. senator from Delaware, told CNN's "American Morning" Thursday.

He went on to list other policy areas the Alaska governor did not address Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"They don't have a single answer {for} how to dig us out of the hole we've been dug into the last eight years," Biden added.

1. What a substantive and direct response
I really like Joe and the depth that he brings to the ticket!

2. Biden
But he's being so nice. We can't win by just sitting back and not calling the Repugs to task on their lies and false values. His comments will now be taken out of context and used against him. Read his whole interview.

The Rethugs are ugly and disgusting. We have to attack them smartly. Kerry did not respond to the ugly attacks, you can be sure Obama will. Look at his website designed to pounce on untruths about himself. Bringing up the pain of the middle class over and over again is staying on message and is very smart. Rethugs have no new ideas for the middle class or direction for this county.

7. Kerry --did-- respond to ugly attacks, but media did not show it. Will they show Obama's?

This is where it gets very tricky. Will media show Obama and Biden responses?

Here's a thread where you can read about the Kerry campaign response to SwiftBoat:

Swift Liars: Kerry-Edwards Campaign Response
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=358&topic_id=2555&mesg_id=2555

Just one single example, a speech he gave to to the International Association of Firefighters' Convention in Boston on Aug 19, 2004 == MEDIA DID NOT SHOW THIS OR TALK ABOUT IT.

...And more than thirty years ago, I learned an important lesson—when you're under attack, the best thing to do is turn your boat into the attacker. That's what I intend to do today.

Over the last week or so, a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has been attacking me. Of course, this group isn’t interested in the truth – and they're not telling the truth. They didn't even exist until I won the nomination for president.

But here's what you really need to know about them. They're funded by hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Republican contributor out of Texas. They're a front for the Bush campaign. And the fact that the President won't denounce what they’re up to tells you everything you need to know—he wants them to do his dirty work.

Thirty years ago, official Navy reports documented my service in Vietnam and awarded me the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. Thirty years ago, this was the plain truth. It still is. And I still carry the shrapnel in my leg from a wound in Vietnam.

As firefighters you risk your lives everyday. You know what it’s like to see the truth in the moment. You're proud of what you’ve done—and so am I.

Of course, the President keeps telling people he would never question my service to our country. Instead, he watches as a Republican-funded attack group does just that. Well, if he wants to have a debate about our service in Vietnam, here is my answer: "Bring it on."

I'm not going to let anyone question my commitment to defending America—then, now, or ever. And I'm not going to let anyone attack the sacrifice and courage of the men who saw battle with me.

And let me make this commitment today: their lies about my record will not stop me from fighting for jobs, health care, and our security – the issues that really matter to the American people...

He made many other speeches and statements and so on -- you can read the list at that thread.

I am hoping that the media shows Obama's responses.

6. This is a good response FOR US, but it's not the way to go after her.
This is the kind of statement WE respond to because we actually THINK about what are leaders represent. But it's not the kind of statement that will take her down in the media. She's not on the ticket for the sake of issues. We need to listen to Lakoff and attack her on her purported strengths: her "story," her small-town appeal bullshit.

Her complete lack of knowledge on the issues will come across plenty in the debates. But the media battle has nothing to do with them, sadly.

8. obama and biden -- refocus things on issues. surrogates -- point out her poor record and lies. EOM
At least that would be my immediate strategy.

9. That's how you respond to this.
Don't address the character attacks--let the O-man do that himself--but instead comment on the utter, utter lack of substance. Emphasize that once again the Republicans are the party of no ideas.
