39. yep.
Some folks here may think that they're "trailer trash" -- but I guarantee you that a lot of working class families -- union families with four or five kids living in parts of Ohio, PA, West Va -- they can and will identify with the Palins. The fact that the Palins and the repub part y don't represent these voters best economic interests is what needs to be the message, not stupid labelling.

Out here in the real world, that just shows that these two young people have a bond (not just a hookup).

They are up against enough (including their families). Let's wish them and their child well and stick to the issues.

34. Do many men wear engagement rings?
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 10:30 AM by moriah
I dunno. When I was handfasted, I did give my fiance' a ring. But I didn't think it was necessarily traditional. It did give some of the vulturous chicks who saw how lucky I was pause, though, because they thought it was a wedding ring.

The relationship didn't last, but he and I are still friends. He's married now with two little girls -- and didn't get married until his wife was 6 months along. That's because she swears she didn't realize she was pregnant until they were six months along. (I don't know if that's true or not, but she had been taking the mini-pill, and many women taking it stop having periods altogether. So it's possible she really didn't know until she started feeling movement that couldn't be explained by gas, and the weight gain couldn't be explained by eating too much. Although it does explain why he was complaining about her mood swings and her inability to stand going to places where people smoked cigarettes...)

I personally don't think it is necessary or good for kids to get married that young, even if there is a baby involved.

My relatives feel the same way. My second-cousin once removed (I had to look that up on Wikipedia to make sure I had the relationship right... weird Arkansas families) got pregnant a few years ago. She was a junior in high school. She wanted to keep her baby, and her boyfriend, who was also a junior, wanted to marry her.

Her mother and grandmother, despite believing that in an ideal world children should be products of a loving marriage, absolutely refused to give permission for her to get married. They got together with his parents, and they all agreed that the most important thing was that the kids both finish school and go to college. The kids had only known each other a few months. Her mother and grandmother were very concerned that if they allowed the marriage that one of them would resent it -- but by refusing to grant permission for the marriage, it gave them the freedom to love each other and let the relationship grow if it would, without feeling like they HAD to stay together.

The grandmother, who is retired, is taking care of her great-granddaughter during the day, and my second-cousin once removed is living with her and going to college. The father of the baby is also going to college, spends more time at the grandmother's house than his own, and they are engaged. He loves his daughter and they have a good relationship. While they are engaged, they have decided not to get married until after college. (Oh, and my second cousin once removed is on the Pill now -- even though her mom had told her she would take her to go get the Pill if she wanted to have sex, she had been afraid that she would be judged or that they would refuse to let her see him if she took her mom up on the offer.)

They wouldn't be able to do it if they didn't have the support of their families. And that, I think, is one of the biggest factors involved with the logistics of teen pregnancy -- so many families are completely unsupportive.

Edit: I no can type good.

The ONLY name you EVER tattoo on your body should be a blood relative because no matter how your relationship with that person goes, they will ALWAYS be a blood relative.

20. I'm more disturbed by high school KIDS getting married, than by the baby.
Anyone here who has a 17 year old kid knows exactly what I mean. Every week my teen daughter fills me in on the 'lasting love' of various couples at school, then within 6 months POOF they're off to someone else. Kids can't pick a hair color for more than a few months at that age, how the hell are they supposed to choose a life partner? Wish the media would show the real people behind this scrubbed up version.. and stop pretending these two are 20-something adults making this decision. Let them dress the way they always dress, and maybe even show Levi with the guns and alcohol to show who they really alre? But the repubs are all about illusions, and they cannot just let these kids be who they are (regardless of whether it fits in with the image they're trying to sell)

You think it's cute that a member of America's future seems to have little, if no, prospects for himself, his baby momma and unborn child? Sorry but there's nothing 'cute' about this situation. Besides, I am very tired of you coming and having NOTHING of substance to add to the conversation other than your 'concern' and aggrandizing attitude. Really, just give it a rest. :eyes:

I thought we were pretty laid back about things as mundane as tattoos.

My daughter has a tattoo - the kind that shows when she wears a lower-cut top. I hope that doesn't make her "trash" in DU's eyes. She's a Democrat, too.

in order to avoid accusations of being judgmental or petty, I offered it without comment. I could care less about his finger or his girlfriend or her family, it is the hypocrisy that bothers me, imagine if one of the Obama or Biden kids were in the exact situation, the wingers would riot in the streets. Maybe the high road is the right path, but it is exhausting...

And that she loves him and takes does things on HER schedule and not what politically motivated others want. If they choose to marry - good. If they don't, I hope they can work together and be good parents.

It's a shame they have to be under the microscope while dealing with all this.

Eighteen is too young to be getting anyone's name permanently tattooed on one's body, let alone having someone's name typed onto a marriage license, but that's beside the point, the deed having been done. I think it's really nice that he did that.
