Cindy McCain's $300,000 Outfit
Cindy McCain's $300,000 Outfit
by Vanity Fair
September 4, 2008, 10:29 AM

One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi “F-in’ Redneck” Johnston.

It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.

Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325

Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

Wow! No wonder McCain has so many houses: his wife has the price of a Scottsdale split-level hanging from her ears.

(All prices except Laura’s shoes and Cindy’s watch are estimates, and the jewelry prices are based on the assumption that the pieces are real.)

19. Like Rush Limbaugh accusing Obama of being the sort of
guy you ind snarking on others in a country club. As though country clubs have been so eager to admit African-Americans to their membership.

4. they should have called each other before the gig...
because Laura's outfit makes her look like the socialites assistant, not the first lady. And usually Laura had that penchant for the big fluffy gowns -- Cindy is proof that having money does not give you any taste. That dress was horrific.

11. I grew up in Minnesota, home of the Democratic Farm-Labor party.
I was raised with the idea that it's the Democrats who represent the real, working Americans. The Republicans were the wealthy elite.

When the hell did the Republicans co-opt the Democratic base of yesteryear?

And why the hell, if Cindy McCain is going to wear the value of a house, is the outfit so danged ugly? Apparently money can buy neither taste nor class.

22. The hypocrisy is so blatant and disgusting
If a person wants to spend that kind of money for an outfit, fine, it's a free country and they can do whatever they want.

But when they call the other side elite and then flaunt that much money on what they wear, they need to fully exposed in the bright light of day as the hypocrites they are. I am so sick of these liars I could scream.

which was an estimate I'd like know how they got.

Even 3 carats per ear aren't likely to tally that much, are they?

Just wondering.

28. Vanity Fair would know; just look at the ads in their magazine.
I subscribe to both VF and Vogue--they definitely know the cost of those things.

I can't afford them, but I copy the looks I like for about 1/20th or less of their featured ensembles.

35. Maybe it is the whole cut/color/clarity thing, which does drive the price on diamnds
I subscribed to Vanity Fair for years; I think I quit after Tina Brown left for the New Yorker. My memory is faded as to the exact details, but at some point the articles seemed less meaty and more disappointing. I was very fond of VF articles for many years.

I don't do fashion anymore like I did when I was younger, but I am a fan also of copying the looks/feel/attitude of anything I want in my life for at least 1/20th of the cost as well:) Less money spent, more time for life.

27. Ugh, attacking the wives.
We all know they're disgusting rich, greedy elitists. Every single person here knows that, but you've probably pissed off a dozen or so Hillary supporters, like me somewhat, with your attacks on two women. For better or worse, attacks on Palin and other women (like her daughters and the wives of other Repuke condidates) are going to cost us Hillary votes. You need to keep in mind your audience when posting. Now if you posted this on a Repuke site, that would be great fun.

31. I expect you missed the many attacks on McLame's $500 shoes...
But crying "sexism" is certainly the word du jour. And this from an AA female whose community has been told not to cry "racism" when continually insulted 24/7/365 (and forget crying "sexism" as an AA female, because apparently that could not apply to the masculated AA female thanks to the racist feminist movement).

43. I'm fine w/ attacks on McLame's $500 shoes
He is the candidate. He was the one that brought-up the issue of elitism.

It's just that the snubbing of Hillary by the party has made us vulernable to just about any issue relating to women. She was wronged by the part, and I know a lot of women that are pissed off about that. Many of them are pissed off enough to not vote and some are learning towards McSame because of that.

32. Well, you know...times are tough right now.
People are worried about the economy. And rightfully so.

And here's Cindy, flaunting $300,000 worth of jewels in people's faces...people are worried about paying the bills, paying their mortgages, losing their jobs. It's disgusting. It's fucking obscene.

Not one word from anyone at this convention about how they would improve the economy. Not one word about generating new jobs in this country. Instead, here's the potential next First Lady, showing off her purchases from Tiffany's.

37. Thank you for pointing this out. And please let's not forget that Cindy
seems a trifle defensive whenever the issue of her wealth comes up. She obviously realizes that the story of McCain not knowing how many houses he owns does not sit well with people struggling to pay the rent, or struggling to pay the mortgage. She appeared on This Week with George Stephanopoulos to voice her indignation at Obama for bringing up McCain's houses gaffe. For obvious reasons she does not want anyone undermining the Republican meme that Obama is the elitist.

Cindy McCain has repeatedly stooped to the level of gutter politics which she claimed would have no part in her husband's campaign. She has even gone after Michelle Obama on the subject of patriotism.

I am personally tired of the PC police dictating what is "off limits" in this campaign.

And here's some more red meat on Cindy McCain. Her father got his start in business by bootlegging liquor for the mob.

30. So Pickles' suit is worth $2500 and it still
looks baggy and ill-fitting on her? The sleeves are too long, the top is saggy, and the bottom of the skirt looks too tight. Jeez, if you are going to wear designer duds, at least spring for a good tailor.

Cindy McCain's dress reminds me of this number, probably appropriate given the credit card bills she's been known to rack up.
