1. Temple
Possibly, that would explain the scene at the Temple.

Don't see what the Temple "scene" had to do with it.

2. That's fine, but there should be a separation between church and state.
Using Jesus in politics shouldn't be condoned.

9. Ok..how's this...
For people who claim to be so Christian to slam "community organization" is extremely hypocritcal. Even the Catholic charities have come out to criticize Palin's statement. Is that clearer now??

you do also.

P.S. I've met some mighty fine Catholic Workers out there literally SERVING the Poor. And they were some of the first to stand up publicly and say killing innocent Iraqis is wrong.

19. I'm glad we're all on the same page. My point was that, even though
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 11:56 AM by valerief
the Far Right uses religion, we shouldn't have to use the idea of Jesus to our advantage, i.e., they make fun of Obama being a community organizer and Jesus was a community organizer (which implies we think Jesus is good which is leaning toward "establishing a religion"), so they're making fun of Jesus.

You can't say religion can't be used in government and then use it to your advantage in politics. That's all I meant.

7. Yes, but he is a model for one's personal life. Politicians should function out of
honest conviction. And we should be in better and more constant, more assertive touch with them, to supervise their "convictions".

He thought Christianity was in the graven image of the cross in the dirt on "Christmas Eve". Yep, we're forgiven and saved by golly, party on!!!

11. I think Gandhi would be a better example, quite frankly.

Indeed, Martin Luther King, Jr. used the same organizing and activism approach as Gandhi, NOT Jesus.

Does the right wing purport to follow Ghandi or Christ?

I know I'm being snippy, but I think the point I'm making is quite clear.

Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 12:32 PM by TahitiNut
That's not just "snippy" ... that's insane. No wonder these forums get filled with the ego-prancing of duplicate threads. You say "I think the point I'm making is quite clear." Well, it's sure a great relief to me that your OWN opinion of YOURSELF is so terrific. It's too bad that feedback (i.e. "DISCUSSION") is so unwelcome. Why, then, do you even bother?

:eyes:

Are you attempting to compare Obama to Jesus??? Do you REALLY think such comparisons have any positive impact on the right wing zealots? Such bullshit merely invites more the the "Messiah" snark. These people are about as far as can be from the "Jesus as a model for my life" (genuine WWJD) mold as can be. They're Pharisees. Such things are mere slogans to them ... to be used as secular conveniences only.

18. Words of Jesus
Not to make DU sound like a church, but look at what Jesus taught:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.'"

Now... does that sound like the Republican party of today? I think not.
