If McCain / Palin win, here's the future.... |
|
Let's assume that McCain's decomposing body is propped up for at least one full term, then he hands over the reigns. Palin wins re-election by fooling the same people Bush did twice and McCain / Palin did once. Let's face it, if they've been fooled twice, thrice is easy and forth is inevitable.
So then you've got at least 12 years. And as Palin pushes her far right, fundimentalist agenda further and further it becomes clear that NO ONE can ever become President without appealing to those people. The only option for a Democrat to become President will be to embrace pro-life, (extreme) pro-gun, anti-gay positions. If you're even a moderate, you'll be smashed to pieces because once a country goes so far down a certain route that becomes the norm. That becomes the accepted way, and if you think the media is bad now, imagine what they'll be conditioned to talk like after 12 more years of fundi-MENTALISM becoming the absolute norm.
That's how important this shit is, as far as I'm concerned. Once conditioned, it's hard to break free. You all know how brainwashed and beyond redemption a lot of far-right extremists already are. Their faulty moral compass cannot be allowed to reign supreme indefinitely.

If they win this time, I'll truly believe that all is lost. And I'll be looking to get out.

13. Long story. We're retirement age, so Canada and New Zealand |
|
were out (they don't want retirees). No family connections to EU to get visas. We like the beach, but ruled out most of Caribbean because of hurricanes. Went to take a serious look at Belize (where the writer Joe Bageant has since bought)and then went back to look for property. Kept hearing about Panama (one condo we looked at where the sellers were leaving Belize for Panama) from friends. Found a development being done by Americans in Panama on the Caribbean side and decided to look. Absolutely gorgeous. Fell in love. It was a rain forest island with primeval looking trees, sloths hanging from trees on the beach, monkeys in the canopy on the ridge of the island...slapped our money down with the developers.
Opened bank accounts (long process). Made our applications for permanent resident visas (Panama WANTS retirees and has good benefits program--but that is soon to change). Everything was proceeding according to plan until the work stopped for the second strike against the developers in Jan 07.
Whole development has been in limbo since then while developers are looking for new money. We have a contract that says if they didn't deliver our house by June 08, we get our deposits back. Developer is refusing to return deposits. We've hired Panamanian attorneys and are just about ready to file a lawsuit.
In the meantime, we have money tied up, so anything we buy can only be less than what we were paying for the place in limbo. Prices have escalated dramatically since 2005, so we don't know what we're going to do. We may have to settle for something less.
I think we're going to wait and see how the election comes out. If McCain/Palin happen to win, then we will probably take an extended trip to Panama and look for something that is finished. If Obama/Biden win, we may just give up on our Panama idea and just let the lawsuit play out without looking for an alternative property.

17. Interesting -- you guys were seriously pursuing the option, whereas I'm |
|
just in the initial wishful thinking stage.
I didn't know that about Australia and Canada -- that sucks. I kind of held Canada in the back of my mind as the place I'd probably go.
The area you describe sounds idyllic. I hope it all works out for you (although the end to the good benefits program doesn't sound good). You could always use it as your vacation get-away if Barack and Joe do win, and rent it out when you're not there.
So did you discount Belize for definite reasons, or just decide that you preferred Panama?
(I'm looking for suggestions/possibilities. :7)

18. We had been concerned about hurricane exposure in Belize, too, |
|
so when we found this place in Panama, we let go of the idea of Belize.
If you look up historical hurricane tracks in the Caribbean, you'll see that Belize has been hit with some devastating hurricanes--and the frequency of higher category storms seems to be increasing. Panama doesn't get hurricanes because of its location--somewhat protected by the northern portion of South America.
We were very bummed by the outcome of the 2004 election. We decided at that point that we wanted to create an escape hatch for ourselves. Once we found the place in Panama, we seriously thought about a dual location retirement: spring/fall in Chapel Hill and summer/winter in Panama. I never wanted to move permanently to Panama--but we also figured that if the economy went in the tank and all hell broke loose in the U.S.--martial law, reduced civil liberties, etc., we could do worse than spending the rest of our lives in paradise.

19. This is the first time I ever even entertained the thought -- |

At this point, if people vote the Reps back in despite the horrifying problems they've created for our country, I'll give up.
Again, hope this works out for you in Panama. :pals:

4. why would they prop up McCain for a term? |
|
Once the WH passes to him, his life will be in grave danger at the hands of the Dominionists whose stated purpose is to infiltrate the government and rule the earth.
They kill doctors. Who is to say they wouldn't kill an old man who stands between them and their heretical scheme?
McCain and the Republicans are tempting the fates; the forces of evil.

8. I don't think most Americans want intelligent design taught in the schools |
|
I don't think they want this far right agenda becoming mainstream. Unless the bible belt whackos start breeding like rabbits and raising an army of little Sarah Palins who will vote for her, I don't think this person will ever have a chance of becoming President.
Sarah Palin is a shiny new toy right now. The media is not telling America how extremist she really is. Over time, everyone will know that Sarah Palin adheres to an extremist way of thought that America will not accept, no matter how much she repeats her PTA, Hockey mom, small town mayor attributes.

The crazier elements of the fundymentalists want to hurry the return of Jeebus by starting just such a war. Google "Joel's Army." And Caribou Barbie's church/cult is tied to them.
