So I Took Myself Out To Lunch

Yeah, I know. I'm worth it.

As I sat by my lonesome, I overheard three ladies talk about Palin two booths down from me. They were the typical 'Gays, Guns, and God' crowd. They loved her, naturally. I remember the same type of dialogue in past elections. But something is awry in Jesusopolis.

Let me explain. In past elections, I remember the fundies (friends, family, and random asshats) being sure of themselves. Sure of their pick: GW Bush was sent from god to free us from ourselves. Sure of their message: Queers and coloreds were destroying our country by trying to take away our guns given to us by god which allowed the terrorists to attack. Everything was in order.

Not this time. These three were talking themselves into Palin. They were selling themselves on the fact that she has a 'very, VERY normal family', which is rather contrary by any measure. They didn't have a thing to say about policy but they 'really really liked her'. As they spoke, sometimes they would hush themselves (I can only imagine to talk about home-o-secks-uals, coloreds, and the likes).

It forced me to remember a time when Republicans were stupid proud of everything. Stupid proud of their way of thinking and god given sameness. And in comparison to the now, this just isn't so. I'm a defense contractor and I work with fundies. They speak in hushed tones and stutter an awful lot these days. This, in itself, is proof of their insecurity. And for everyone of them that says, well ok I'll pull the lever for gramps, they must know someone in their circle who isn't so willing. And none of them are all that excited, even if Palin is their token nutcase on the ticket.

Past elections has shown excited voters vote. Excited voters get other voters excited and they vote, too. I'm just not seeing that, before, during, or after the Palin effect.

I don't know, it just made me feel good. I honestly think we're going to win because we have the right people and it's the right time.

3. Getting their base to the polls is going to be tough... especially when they see the lines!

We're going to have such a huge turnout this year that the thugs are going to shrug and say "forget it. I'm not waiting in line with those people."

5. Now that you mention it...

I haven't seen a single McCain for President sign in my entire neighborhood.

And, if you'd ever been here you would know that this is a pretty big deal. This is a
fairly well-off neighborhood, 99% older white racist republican voters, in an extremely red county in MS.
These people commonly have signs of the 10 commandments in their front yards, and every single
election, all of the local politicians come here and kiss major ass...it's sickening!

So maybe you're on to something here...unfortunately, the only way to find out
for sure would mean I'd have to actually speak to these loonies.
