What if McCain is unable to give a coherent speech to night. Will they push Palin up or bring in
Cheney for a Cheney/Palin ticket or a Palin/Cheney ticket.

2. No, the MSM will gloss over the issue of his sanity
By the time they get done saying what a great speech it was he will come across as a better speaker than anyone in the last 100 years.

3. As long as he stays awake
and doesn't fall off the stage (a la Bob Dole), the pundits will praise his folksy town hall style of speaking that so connects with the people.

4. I'm unsure which direction McCain will go in tonight.
If he is Palin- and Rudy-esque in his bile and rhetoric, it will continue to turn off independents and swing voters. Sure, it'll get the base riled up, but you DON'T WIN ELECTIONS WITH 35% OF THE VOTE.

If he is conciliatory, moderate and issues-oriented, the media is forced to look DIRECTLY at the issues--Obama vs. McCain. And no matter which way you slice it McCain's record cannot be ignored. Obama wins a purely issues-oriented debate hands-down.

So what does he do?

7. Don't count on it.
Sure, it would be nice if he choked on his tongue, but it is highly unlikely.

Like his running mate, he will read a mediocre speech, the crowd will applaud thunderously and the pundits will say it was the greatest speech in history.

8. McCain is going to give the speech of his life tonight.
And if he doesn't, they'll sell it as his just being his ole maverick self, not giving the speech of his political life when everyone's expecting him to.
