What is happening with the Fourth Estate? We've got Soledad O'Brien calling out Palin's

"special needs child" hypocrisy:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6928643

McCain/Palin scared of the likes of Campbell Brown:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6904298&mesg_id=6904298

and rumors are that Sarah Palin is scared to go on "Countdown." (sorry, saw that on a DU thread that I can't find now.)

Lord knows I have despised the m$m in the past; but if the republicans are running scared from them--good on ya; Fourth Estate. Keep up the ESSENTIAL work for democracy!

:wow:

it's kind of scary to see the contrast, i don't expect it will last though.

19. Someone who really knows the facts needs to go on those panels
Apart from Rachel Maddow, I haven't seen any panel member who has a command of the facts. Yesterday, Maddow mentioned to Tweety that Palin's church invited an anti-semitic speaker to talk to the membership while Palin was in attendance and she didn't say anything or denounce the message.

Tweety appeared to have never heard of the story, althought it's been all over the blogs. These assholes who call themselves journalists just don't do homework.

2. We need them to hammer on McCain's cancellation of the Habitat for Humanity
visit scheduled for today (I think) - since Palin disparaged community organizers in her speech last night (and everyone laughed right along with her.)

Nothing in the news yet - but I hope they make the connection give it a lot of coverage.

5. If they don't; we must. I think part of what is happening is that they are getting
seriously punked by the bloggers--and they sense that the lefter side of the spectrum is going to emerge triumphant this year.

4. CNN wants to make sure they are seen attacking the GOP once or twice b/f October.
That way they can claim to be "objective" when they attack the DEMS in full force for the entire month of October.

As another DUer said- there are better scripted rivalries on Reality TV than this whole "Liberal Media vs. the GOP" crap...

6. It's because McCain stupidly started blaming them
It started when he was ripping into them about Obama being their favorite, back when The Big O went overseas.

Now that the media has dared to ask unwarranted questions like "Who the fuck is Sarah Palin?" and "What has she done?" he started to go unhinged. That's pissed his "base" off quite a bit. Read Joe Klein's latest work, the media is pissed off at McCain for being a baby about all of this.

10. The GOP has been disparaging the media for 20 years- why is this the tipping point?
I've seen the GOP attack the media for the past 20 years- yet the media bends over backwards to be "objective" in their favor- and even flat out lies for them on major issues.

I hope you guys are right- but I dont see "The Liberal media" changing its stripes overnight.

17. because McCain used to be their buddy
Inviting them to BBQs at his ranch, they'd sit back in the bus with him in 2000 for hours with unfettered access. He had a unique biography and was a compelling character, running as a, and I hate this word, "Maverick." Now he's just a prick who has cut off the access, advocated the worst policies imaginable and grown tired, quick-tempered and angry. And when they actually started doing a little reporting and less fawning, he's gotten ugly with them. Now nobody can so much ask him or his campaign a question and they get all snippy, like when McCain pulled out of the Larry King interview because Campbell Brown dared to ask a routine question about Palin's experience.

They even tried covering for McCain alot this year, they really respect him and how he used to open up for them. I heard one reporter say they felt that somebody almost had to save him from himself because he'd talk so much on the record, that's why I think they were always hesitant to report his gaffes. Or criticize them. Now, after all that, he's making them the enemy, and not in a vague way, he's done that before, but he's making it more personal by doing things like cutting off access and cancelling interviews etc. The Palin choice was so beyond the pale that when they asked questions, he got testy and blamed them for it, so the rift is finally coming to light. John McCain started a war with the media, maybe they won't go all out in it, but they aren't too happy with him.

23. The GOP baited them and blamed them even after the media got them elected and gave them their war.
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:02 PM by Dr Fate
And yet they still cover the GOP "objectively" and give his party almost full benefit of the doubt.

Its theater. Its a game.

The media is not in the business of holding grudges against the party that signs their paychecks- but they are up for playing a few games to appear truly objective now & then.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade- I'm trying to suggest that we are stupid if we expect the media to be our allies- it is the job of DEMS with media access to make sure the attacks on the GOP continue.

If you are counting ont he media to strike hard, lasting blows against McCain-especially come October, you might be mistaken.

I truly believe it is a game and theater.

Let's see how "pissed" they are at the GOP 3 weeks before November.

Arizonans know that he's courted the press very successfully with a few notable exceptions--and they aren't afraid of telling it like it is.

Amy Silverman and Michael Lacey of New Times and to a lesser extent Jana Bommersbach have covered him very objectively It ain't pretty.

Willie Geist, Scar et. al.

Not to get all Axis of Evil but Tucker's old producer Willie Geist, Scarborough's on-air personality producer is a real nasty piece of work.

And not only that, but has been denying tem access.

Big mistakes.

They may get their wish of a liberal media bias for the final couple months of this election.

30. Bush attacked & gave fewer pressers than any Prez. in modern history. Yet MSM elected him twice...
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:53 PM by Dr Fate
...and gave him his war-and continue to support it- and continue to be "objective" when presenting the GOP as a whole.

Bush denied the media access and continued to bait & insult them- yet the media never called him a liar, supported impeachment, or supported voices that did. They literally let every scandal drop like yesterday's news. All you need to do is compare any crime Bush did to Clinton's impeachment, Swiftboat Vets, or the Rev. Wright story if you want to see how the media treats the two parties.

I'm not sure what the difference is now- and I think some of us better take off these rose-colored glasses.

and some of them feel guilty. Also, McCain doesn't have the power that Bush did to control them; if he shuts them out, his silence becomes the story.

33. I'm sure that the GOP/media is fully aware of itself. It was aware of itself during Bush too..
We must have a completely different picture of what is going on.

I dont see the GOP owned media as two separate entities-I see that one owns the other.

Others seem to think the media might rebel against the people who sign their paychecks and pay their rent and bills.

I hope you are the one who is right.
