Craps McCain rolled the dice and WON ...
At least for the first round.

It seemed a totally crazy gamble, but since the MSM are giving the Palin speech rave reviews -- stunning, out of the park, powerful, star is born, etc. -- we can't deny its success. No matter what the viewers of the speech really felt -- I was sickened -- opinion tends to be shaped by the commentary over the succeeding days. So, we can expect the race to be tied by next week.

The choice still remains a decision to go gambling. Let's hope that some new revelation ends his winning streak and brings their house of cards crashing down.

In addition to electifying the Con base he has also electrified the Progressive base, and I'll wait to see next weeks polls to gauge the success of the speech. As of today the polls are still trending away from him.

If this is what winning looks like, I'd hate to see what he looks like loosing.

29. it's all up to the media now....maybe a little from the dems: if they
insist on covering Palin's almost uncountable weaknesses/lies/distortions, she should go down in flames

but the media will react in the opposite manner they did yesterday/today if dems claim the story isn't being covered: they'll accuse the dems of being sexist whiners, and deride them for awhile.....soon after stop covering ANY negative story about her, or McCain, for that matter

where's the Keating Five in all this, or Carl Lindner, terrorist financier/multimillion dollar McCain fundraiser?

where's the lettuce story?

33. Won? All he did was grab headlines for a few days. If he deficated in a public park he would have
grabbed even more headlines.

Besides, you say "McCain rolled the dice." There is every indication that Palin was picked for him against his wishes to run with Lieberman. McCain had little to do with Palin's selection (and, in 2012, she'll blame him for the ticket's loss when she runs for the Repub nomination to challenge President Obama).

40. I don't think it was a gamble. It was a capitulation. McCain wanted to run a campaign to win the
independents and moderates. The Repub machine wanted to run a get-out-the-base campaign (because it is less risky for their downballot races). When McCain gave up on his plan to choose Lieberman and chose redmeat for the base instead, he lost the command of his own campaign.

48. Whose base has been more energized by the Palin pick?
I'll argue that our base, the Obama-Biden, base has been just as energized, if not more, by the Palin selection. It works both ways. And having her come out last night with badly framed attacks on Obama is really heating up our blood. Which is great. AND our pocketbooks. 8 million raised during her speech last night.
Palin is a gift. She's a smart lady, no question. But she's a governor who is not widely traveled and seems to have W.'s same lack of intellectual curiousity about the world. She's going to try and study for the test the night before. And, usually, that doesn't result in a very high grade. Her strengths have been on display, her adorable children and her feisty underdog charm. But she's got weeks ahead of a media which will ask questions about Pakistan, North Korea, Iran, as well as a host of domestic issues beyond her current realm.
Now, a guy like Clinton, another governor, could handle all that because the guy is just so scary smart. "W" went with the narrative strategy. Hey, I'm a cowboy. Vote for me.
This will be Palin's strategy. Hey, I'm a cowgirl, vote for me.
But, Americans are a little jaded right now on the "narrative" candidates. They haven't proven to be effective leaders.
