Rep. Westmoreland (R-GA) calls Obama “uppity” |
|
Not even trying to hide their racism anymore, I see.
The Hill:
Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term “uppity” to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday. Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama. “Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said.
Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

6. Hell, I read about white DEMOCRATS in Ohio dropping the "n-bomb" RE: Obama. |
|
I know "Democrat" doesn't necessarily translate to "liberal," and that you don't necessarily have to be a conservative to be racist (or vice versa), but it still shocked me a little. Especially as a lifelong (non-rural) Northern California native, not being used to that kind of overt racism.

3. I really hope this backfires on them, but I don't know... |
|
Considering Nixon, Reagan, Helms, and all the rest of them, it doesn't seem like modern Republicans in general really care how much racism their party displays. It's all part of a self-righteous sense of majority (cultural majority, if not in sheer numbers) victimhood. Think "War on Christmas," but in racial terms.
On a more positive note, has anyone read the recent Nation article "The End of Bubba Dominance"? The basic premise is that demographic trends in the U.S., the population as a whole becoming less white and more secular, will increasingly neutralize the "backlash politics" the Republicans have been so good at over the past 40 years. Think permanent Democratic majority... :)

4. Isn't he saying that he thinks Obama thinks Palin is uppity? |
|
He appears to have some problems with the English language, but it doesn't look to me as though he's trying to accuse Obama of being uppity himself.

7. But still, it's a pretty loaded word, at least in the U.S. |
|
Usually applied to a member of some minority group perceived as stepping outside of their expected stereotypical role. And at this point, I'm honestly not prepared to give any Republican/conservative the benefit of the doubt. They're using every weapon they can against Obama, and that includes exploiting racial fears and stereotypes.

the question posed to him was about his wanting to display the 10 Commandments in courtrooms. Robert Colbert asked him to name the 10 Commandments and he was stumped. too Funny
