McCain loses the support of former Clinton backer over Palin pick

Reba Shimansky

Talks to The Page“The Palin selection may have energized the GOP base but it hurts him with independents. I would have voted for McCain if he made a sensible choice for VP like Ridge which would have shown that he was willing to stand up to the rightwing crackpots in his party. Therefore I will be sitting out the 2008 presidential election.”

1. This is good to know.
McCain/Ridge might have been ok. But with a Gingrich-controlled Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency, women are in huge trouble.

4. Most of my friends label themselves "independents" (men and women). They are all, without exception
voting for Obama because of this choice and about half of them would have supported McCain if he had chosen somebody else (most wanted Romney)

5. As soon as I heard McNuts pick, I knew what he was after, and
he FAILED! There are a lot of EXPERIENCED fundie RW people he could have chosen, like Huck, Brownback, Santorum, etc. but instead he chose a woman! That could only have been for ONE REASON...Hillary's dissappointed voters! I also instantly knew they would NEVER vote for an extremist like Sarah! So now, not only did he not get the Hillbots, but he also lost what Indi's he might have had!

Good going Nutball!

6. A Ridge or Lieberman Pick Would Have Made McCain More Palatable
To swing voters. Yes, it would not have excited the right wing base, but its not like the RW was going to vote for Obama anyways. This is why McCain's caving in to the right demonstrated such weakness.

First, McCain could not stand up to the RW when they had no choice but to support him.

Second, McCain let them pick a pure idealogue who is not merely inexperienced, but holds extreme ideals.

I know people who were tepid in their support of the Democrats (independents) who are actually energized against McCain, but would have considered McCain if he picked a more moderate choice. Heck, Olympia Snowe could have really put McCain over the top, but Palin? Now, I know people who are strongly supporting Obama out of fear of Palin.
