Are you registered to vote? Find out instantly
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 01:19 PM by Qutzupalotl
Are you registered to vote? At your current address?

Take 1 minute and check instantly if you're registered to vote by filling out the form . . . . If you're not, we'll help you get registered.

If, as Greg Palast claims, thousands of legitimate voters have been purged from the rolls, we need to get this to as many people as possible before the deadline to register.

1. Another resource
http://www.canivote.org/

This only has D.C. and 30 states (some only partial) listed.

5. That link says I'm not registered. First time in my life that's been the case.
I'll be verifying this on Monday. Thanks for the link.

32. It said I wasn't registered, either.
Although I just moved, it might not make it into their system yet. But the part I thought was weird was they said if you came up as unregistered, register with them. If I am registered, but then I register again, couldn't that be interpreted by the government as fraudulent?

Regardless, I'll be contacting the county clerk on Monday.

35. I believe you can re-register without penalty.
You can change party affiliation, for example.

Now voting twice, that's illegal.

37. That makes sense.
Still, I don't want to give them any justification--warranted or otherwise--to disqualify me. Of course, I can't do anything about the electronic voting machines, but that's another story altogether. :banghead:

42. UPDATE: I called the county clerk today and I'm NOT in their system.
The woman told me they stopped entering new people on July 14 when they underwent a computer upgrade and now they're working to get all those registrations in the new system. She said to call back in a couple weeks and check again. I certainly will--a computer upgrade keeping names from being entered into the system is fishy so close to a national election, imo.

We have about 4 weeks in most places. That should be plenty of time to right some of the wrongs perpetrated by the Right.

I have a feeling I'll be posting this again closer to the deadlines...

22. I thought I was registered but
it says I'm not. I thought I registered about 2 months ago when I moved and they mailed me a voter registration ID card, but I wasn't certain if I then needed to do something with that card or if everything was finished. Should I mail in the printout from votepoke's website? I hate waiting like 15 min on lines or on the phone and the idea of calling to find out seems like a pain but I'll do it if I have to.

23. Is there more than one way to type your address?
Apartment #, etc.? That would be my first guess. I don't know how sophisticated their checker is. You might have to type it exactly as it appears on your registration card. It's worth checking into.

Good thought though. I'm not in a state that's up for grabs (Alabama) but I'd still like to impact the popular vote. I'll make phone calls until I can figure out how to check my status.

25. I found this on their FAQ page:
*What happens when I poke my friends?

When you invite your friends to use VotePoke, we'll send a short email to them including your personalized message. When you poke friends who aren't registered to vote or haven't checked their registration status, we'll send them a short reminder email to encourage them to get registered.

*Why do you need my email address?

We need your email address so that you can see which of your friends have registered. We also may need it to tell you your voter registration status if we're not immediately able to verify it. You won't be added to any mailing lists unless you explicitly ask to be.

*Will you keep my friends' email addresses?

We'll only email your friends when you tell us to. Once they check their voter registration status, we'll encourage them to invite their friends too, to make sure that every eligible voter is registered to vote.

*Can I opt out of getting further emails from VotePoke?

You can unsubcribe from all further VotePoke emails at any time by clicking the link that appears at the bottom of every VotePoke email.

30. They do...under FAQ.
They don't save them or subscribe you to any list-servers unless you agree (the check-box at the bottom of the form.)...they use the info to cross-check against voter registration databases. They need your email so they can send you voter-registration confirmation information (i.e. the phone number for your local registrar of voters) or information to register if they cannot immediately confirm you are registered.

It's also an https:// so it's secured/encrypted so that your information can't be stolen or hacked in transmission.
