20. Hey, it's the new "Pointy Girl." Remember Lynndie England, the leash lady of Abu Ghraib?
There she was, pointing her way through some of those nice photos.

7. There are church ladies like that across the country
They're smart, they're experienced. The funny thing is, a few of the ones I know recognize that Sarah Palin is rather a characteure of the worser parts of that image.

A good friend from Iowa said to me yesterday, it's so confusing because she seems like someone I'd be in favor of -- being a mother and a church goer...but I found the image of a mother being crossed with a pit bull with lipstick idea just horrifying. What sort of mother would be a pit bull?"

That's what my midwestern Church lady friend had to say. Let's hope they're all so clear eyed!

11. Church Lady, indeed. Unfortunately she is from one of those
crazy snake-handling churches, and SHE'S the snake.

16. Your reference intrigued me
I haven't read Atwood's book, but I googled it. Just this little description from Wikipedia seemed to make your point!

This is how they describe Serena Joy: "A former televangelist who seems loosely based on Anita Bryant, as well in parts Tammy Faye Bakker and Phyllis Schlafly, she is now a Wife in the fundamentalist theocracy she helped to create. She is neither serene nor joyful; all power and public recognition have been taken away from her by the state, as it has been for all women in Gilead. Being sterile, she also has to bear the indignity of having a Handmaid and being present every month as her husband has sex with the Handmaid at the Ceremony on the Commander's bed."

I'll need to read the book! The description of Serena Joy seems eerily like Palin and a number of other conservative women of her type.

19. With the exception of the sterility, it's a spot-on analogy.
I highly recommend the novel if you get the chance to read it. You have to keep reminding yourself it's fiction and not a primer for the evangelicals.
