The demographic suicide of the RepubliKKKan Party
I trust that most DUers watched some or most of the Repuke KKKonvention. My friends, this is a party that will be extinct within two generations. The one thing that stood out most to me when watching that crowd was how OLD and how WHITE it was. The Republican party has, with both arms, embraced its own death warrant and fervently hugged it to itself.

This is a country that is becoming younger, faster, than I had though possible even ten years ago. This is due to immigration, primarily. Younger people are, by and large, unbothered by the racial, gender, and sexual preference dichotomies that mean so very much to older voters. They have grown up in a world where an African-American teacher or principal, a woman doctor, or a gay friend has ALWAYS been a part of their lives. These “differences” have no extrinsic meaning to them and are not the divisive factors they were to prior generations. They are interconnected with a far larger slice of the world than people of my, or my parents’ generation. They aren’t afraid of differences. Of course, there are some exceptions on the batshit fundymentalpatient side of the demographic, but they are a relatively small minority.

What do you remember most about the crowd shots at the Repuke hatefest? What I remember is how white and old those people looked. Blacks, Asians, Latinos? Token handfuls at most in that crowd. Gays? You are kidding, right? The usual Repuke youthbots were there, doubtless with their furious, reactionary parents, or in hopes of fellating their way to the top of the current economic food chain.

This is not the demographic future of the United States, unless the stinking, putrefying corpse of the Repuke party is somehow dragged across the finish line in November by the corporate media and rigged voting machines, If that happens, the Talibornigans will stick an ice pick in Grampy’s ear sometime during his first year in office, Miss Moosepatty will take over and initiate the Dominionists’ fantasies of nuclear Armageddon to “bring back” (as if he had ever been here in the first place) their insane Rambo Jeebus to establish a totalitarian dictatorship. If that happens, we are all royally fucked and my theory, and everything else, won't matter a whit.

Assuming, however, that the fundymentalpatients’ wet dreams do not come to pass, what does this mean for the Repukes? Lingering death, in my studied opinion. This will become a more and more diverse country over the next generation – racially, religiously, in terms of open sexual orientation and in every other way. It is the inevitable path of history. For the last 28 years the Repukes have defined themselves as the party of well-off, lily-white, reactionary, "religious" America. That is an America that is dying a little more every minute. If there is one thing that grassroots Repukes hate above all else it is diversity and difference. They are doomed to fight a battle that can never be won. What does the Repuke philosophy offer to a young Indian or Filipino grad student who hopes to resettle here? What does the Repuke philosophy offer to a Hispanic immigrant working in the fields or as a hotel maid breaking her back to feed her kids? What does the Repuke party offer to ANY black person, African, African-American or other?

It offers a sign. A sign 100 feet wide and 50 feet high. The words emblazoned on it in a Cinerama text are "NOT WELCOME HERE".

The Repukes hate anyone different in any way from themselves in any quality but hair color. They loathe with the frenzied, mindless intensity of sharks battling over a whale carcass. They offer nothing to anyone but themselves. But they are ultimately fucked. The shifting demographics of this country will exterminate the Repuke party as we know it if we can hold it off long enough for it to die. And die it will. If there is a United States of America 100 years from now, our descendants will look back in bemused amazement at the long dead entity that called itself the Republican Party.

History is on our side. All we have to do is make sure that we get there.

4. The repukes don't have a problem with that
They represent the people who are paying those substandard wages. Oh, and people have been predicting the demographic suicides of conservative parties for a generation or more, and they're still around. The reactionary right tend to breed faster than the abortion-loving* left - look at the Palins.

*=:sarcasm:, in case anyone missed it.

the Hispanic population is growing exponentially in America, and "that's a reason to celebrate!"........and the dumbfounded Repukes responded with........crickets........ Honestly, I swear, their little hearts skipped a collective beat. They looked like they wanted to throw up.

12. california
is ahead of the curve but the same thing has happened here (and still happening). CA used to frequently elect repub senators, vote republican in presidential elections. A typical right-wing repub governor could no longer be elected here..Arnold is just moderate enough to squeak through. I live in Orange County, still a bastion of R votes, but signs of change even here..

14. I watched the whole thing.
I know these people, and they will not go away. They will be back, in 2012, stronger than ever. Democrats in the late 70's made the mistake of underestimating them, and now we're payin' the price. Their message of hatred and intolerance is timeless. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

15. I don't give them two generations
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 03:17 AM by tsegat01
Either they have to go through a major transformation or they will become extinct. Then the Democratic party will split into two parties, liberal and moderate. The extremists on the right won't disappear, but I think they'll back off for a while and regroup. Then they will try to infiltrate the more conservative wing of the Democratic party.
