5. They lean RW (sad, because I'm a member) but lately they
have sounded more like they might endorse Obama or at least tacitly approve of him.

8. They don't endorse anybody. And they aren't right wing.
They take their share of hits, but on most issues - Social Security, Medicare, SCHIP, consumer issues, utilities - they are on our side. They are nonpartisan, but they kind of have to be, with 40 million members.

13. They blew it on Medicare
and they were started by an insurance agent. Never forget that winning the AARP medicare supplement contract is HUGE for any insurance company. AARP will never advocate for single payer or a health care solution that doesn't include insurance. And if they ever figure out how to get their hands on social security money, they'll advocate for private accounts too.

16. they are the motivating force behind DividedWeFail and I have never
perceived them as highly partisan in either direction but when all the things you listed in your post come up, AARP is right there to defend and protect.

They got snookered on the Rx Drug (MedicareD) thing.

14. great! I just joined AARP so I could get $100 off the Curves fee...
no kidding! If you join AARP, you can join Curves for $49.00!!(Sorry, guys, only for ladies! They do have a similar Gold's Gym discount, though!) The one-time entrance fee is usually $149.00! What a bargain, right? You still have to pay the monthly fee, though, which is around $30-$40. A $100.00 off! Great deal!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I resigned from AARP when they promoted the Medicare Part D program. I have now rejoined since they have backed off of their promotion of that disastrous program.
