Is there anything wrong with with the Obama team using the word "liar" |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 05:16 PM by PlanetBev
I saw Rachel Maddow's video calling them exactly what the Republicans are and it was very, very effective.
If the other side is going to make this about character, we've got to play them at their own game.

He said, "You can't just make stuff up."
It's a start.

3. It's dangerous to throw the word "liar" around |
|
But if the Republicans keep it up, Obama probably will start using it, since it will be completely irrefutable.

9. I agree. When fact-checking an opponent's speeches, the NUMBER OF TIMES a false |

statement has been used and the level of vetting a false statement must have gotten are very relevant. Plus, "the medium is the message". Hot words like "liar" may lead media consumers to believe the candidate who uses them is "angry" or "hotheaded".
The first or second time a statement is made, IMO an appropriate reply is, "Please check your facts--that's not accurate. Independent source X says ... See factcheck.barackobama.com for documentation of what they said."
When the opponent repeats the false statement repeatedly after having been rebutted publicly, IMO it's appropriate to reply, "You must know that statement is FALSE. We've talked about this before, more than once."
But when the head of the ticket repeats known false statements in TV ads and in prime-time televised prepared speeches, "That is a deliberately false statement" may be appropriate, if it is accompanied by a detailed description of previous face-to-face rebuttals of the same falsehood. In any case Obama, Biden, Clinton, or other key Democrats must keep their cool whenever cameras may be turned on.

4. It's bad marketing to throw the word "liar" around |
|
Saying "John McCain just doesn't get it" helps to reframe the story on the Republicans without actually saying "he's old and blind".

12. Well, I'm in sympathy with your term "LYING SACKS OF SHIT!". |
|
However, that might be a bit too strong for your average political speech. "Just making stuff up" is precise enough to get the point across.

I know we've got an amazing team that won't take any bullshit, but it's so hard watching these puke assholes pull the same shit election year after election year.

7. You can only use the word, Liar, if you can prove the other party KNEW they |
|
were not telling the truth versus they had the facts wrong.
Until Obama can do that, he can give the facts with evidence and rhetorically say "We both can't be right. Let them show you their evidence, and you, the voters decide."

McCain and Gimmick look into the camera lens and lie their asses off - its about time someone refuses to put a civilized face on this reprehensible behavior.
