I'm feeling much better
I'm feeling much better about our chances for winning this thing in November. Have to confess that the latest polls have gotten me down, since I for one am a great believer in H.L. Mencken's line that "nobody ever went broke overestimating the stupidity of the American public", as evidenced by the great MML love affair with Alaska's version of Erin Brockovitch. I have been particularly concerned about Obama's and Biden's lack of forcefully bringing the argument to the Repukes, not calling a spade a spade but rather using euphemisms for the lies that the RNC and McSame advance daily against them.

Tonight, however I attended the monthly meeting of a Men's organization I belong to, which is composed almost exclusively of 60+ year old Michigan blue collar workers - small town, factory workers, conservative, clannish, and usually 1000% Rethugs. I was astounded to hear the conversation started by THEM - nothing but praise for Biden on Meet the Press Sunday, and nothing but absolute scorn for McSame being a candidate of "change" and the "qualifications to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency" of Nanook of the North. The most vocal of the group stated that he'd "been voting Republican for the past 27 years but was going to vote for Obama this time". These are people that used to be the backbone of the Rethugs and if this small sampling is any evidence of a larger trend, Obama is going to win this thing handily! We can't take anything for granted however, and need to keep working our asses off to make sure everyone votes and that ALL the votes are counted (this time). However, this small ray of hope did wonders for me, and hopefully will do the same for my fellow DUers.

1. WONDERFUL to hear! We need Michigan! Thank you! These stories are important.
I think as more people hear and believe that others around them are voting for Obama, this will move people. We must spread the word.

2. Welcome to DU!
:hi: and thanks for the good story too. We all need to be out there talking to people IRL about this election and I think we would see something different than the latest polls.

4. Thanks for spreading the good feelings!
I think Biden will work wonders with that particular demographic. I wish those guys could have seen him in Sarasota! And Montana!

Thanks! :hi:

6. That's great to hear
I just got back from seeing Obama in Farmington Hills. He was fabulous!

If we're starting to pull in some of the Repukes in Michigan, we'll be in good shape here.

Welcome to DU!

:hi:

8. the polls by and large show a neck and neck race, which is not a bad position from
where Obama will ultimately spring forward. He will win this election.

13. I think we have to start reconsidering our faith in polls
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 08:35 PM by MadMaddie
the media and the pollsters themselves have been intellectually dishonest about how they are presenting the numbers.

Notice when they talk about Obama it's - he's only ahead by 1-5 points
When it is McCain it's - McCain is crushing Obama...

I stopped paying attention to them because of stories like this. They are not polling these people.

9. I too feel much better
I quit reading all the palin junk and have been listening to Obama today in Mi and on Oberman. Whenever I hear them I get energized. I will be attending a local meeting of Obama campaigners on Thurs. It is going to take all of us to do something to make sure that we win this one.

14. Thank you for posting this!
It sure is the perfect thing to lift our spirits!

I'll be canvassing this weekend. I'm in Detroit, which is certain to go to Obama. Our big thing here is to get people registered and make sure they vote.
