A sad, sad commentary on middle/working class Philly
I found this very disheartening. It makes me angry, frustrated, embarassed to be from this city.

Biden gets mixed welcome in Northeast
Local Dem leaders say race is issue for many voters

DEMOCRATIC vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden went stumping for votes yesterday in Northeast Philadelphia, where Democrats need to earn the love of Democrats who voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in the April primary.
He worked a diner, gave a rousing speech on bread-and-butter issues at a union hall, and reeled off a memorable line tying the Republican candidate to the unpopular team in the White House...

"The Dunkin' Donut crowd tells me that we've got everything going for us but Obama," McAleer said. "They can't give me a direct answer. Do I have them right now in the 66th ward? No. But I got 60 days to get them."

Asked what the problem is with Obama, McAleer paused and said: "It's his color . . . I tell them he's half white and half black. He's got a better perspective for everything in this country." ....
"I told him I'm not going to vote for him," Bauer said. "Anybody who runs with a guy with a name like that is not going to get my vote. It'd be disgusting to get a man named Barack Obama as president of the United States. No way. I mean it . . . I'm going to vote for McCain and the lady."

" a Muslim," Bauer added. "He pretends to be a Christian, and he isn't, he's a Muslim."
... :(

1. Do not think for a moment

racism won't have some play in this. We just need to overcome.

3. I don't care if that woman is 89...
She's an ignorant disgusting bigot, and I hope she comes back in her next life as a minority.

4. No worries
These dumbasses weren't voting Obama anyway. That "my Muslim faith" thing isn't going to help though. All the hicks hear is "my muslim faith" over and over, sigh.

6. Well, racism is still alive and well in America. Obama is being brave though.
He is not afraid of this and if these people vote against their own interests then they should not complain about how high gas is, how little their take home pay is, how high medical bills are. They will have no out to complain. Suck it up and take what you voted for. I actually fear for Obama's safety being the first black candidate to run for president. Sad that the United States promotes freedom everywhere around the world but in our own backyard we are STILL dealing with bigots. As a white woman who had black male friends in college, I directly saw racism in my own hometown when my friends visited me. The looks, stares, and whispers bothered me and this was in 1996! Sickening, really. I wanted to slap the people who stared at us and tell them that the young man I was with head a 4.0 GPA and was a resident adviser for all the other kids on his floor.

7. Ahhh, the City of Brotherly Love
That's OK, I grew up with people like that - 90% of the guys I grew up with in the inner city talked like that. Boston is still a very liberal city overall, so you can't judge the book by the cover in this instance.

10. Here's what I hope happens to Carolyn Bauer if McCain wins
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 09:28 PM by GrizzlyMan
I hope that after he taxes her medical benefits and makes it easier for big comapnies to raise her cost of living at their whim, she has to choose between eating cat food and taking her meds every fucking day of the rest of her miserable fucking life. Unfortunately at 89, her suffering won't be long enough.

11. Point out that Republicans want women to DIE.
No abortion, ever, even if the fetus will die anyway, if the mother is going to die without an abortion, she will just have to die. God's will, you know.

According to Smerconish (conservative Philly talk radio host), that was voted into the Republican platform this year. :puke:

(of course Smerconish put it slightly differently. only slightly - he's conservative, but on most issues he isn't batshit crazy.)
