Pastor: GOP downplaying Palin's Pentecostal past

For decades, Sarah Palin went to church with people who spoke in tongues and believed in faith healing and the "end times." Her former pastor says the Pentecostal past of the GOP vice presidential nominee may now be being downplayed to avoid misunderstanding. But the pastor, Tim McGraw, says he's sure religion influences Palin's policy-making.

8. George Bush Sr. addressed a Pentecostal conference back in '89
I know, because I was there. He wasn't personally there, but he gave a videotaped address to the United Pentecostal General Conference in Salt Lake City back in 1989.

You don't get much more extreme right than the United Pentecostal branch of Pentecostalism.

I love to see stories like this--and not just because they disseminate the truth.

I love it because at least some media, some of the time--dares to go against the almighty
and defiant John McCain.

I can't believe what a petulant ass he is being to the media--because they're not kissing his
ass. He's being 100 times worse than Bush EVER was!

41. Many Evangelical Groups Consider It Heretical

At Pentecost, the words were understood. There are substantial evangelical groups who are suspect of uninterpreted glossolalia as an invitation to demonic spirits. Yup.

They did the whole ecstatic prophecy thing, obsessed over purity, and believed that God literally spoke through them--in the second century. It's nothing new.

61. This is not my strong suit, but
can you call it a "heresy" if it happened in the 2nd century, i.e., before Constantine?

No more a heresy than Gnosticism, which flourished in roughly the same time frame.

65. Well, orthodox Christianity eventually rejected it, like Gnosticism.
Montanism lasted a good while, though, and even Tertullian became involved in it.

The irony of early heresies, though, is that most modern day evangelicals practice a form of Gnosticism, what with their conviction that the material world (especially the body) is evil, but have no idea and think they are orthodox Christians!

When he found out he was going to become Attorney General he anointed himself with cooking oil. Also, he wanted to cover nude statues and was afraid of calico cats emissaries of the devil.

Palin belongs to the same church as John Ashcroft. No big deal.

I just did a search of Snopes and they are now denying the cat story as of 2007. For years they listed it as possible. Guess I may owe John an apology on this one. That does not remove the soaring eagle from the ranks of the religiously insane.

For a Democrat like Reid it would have barely been an issue at all. But since many Republicans are religious bigots, Romney's faith was a big issue.

I really think that when a religion has a UNITED STATES SPECIFIC END TIMES STORY -- and when the founder of that religion had it out for the US government, that people should ask, uh, so you do you think you're gonna reign with Jesus Christ in Missouri or whatEVER? I never saw him asked that kind of stuff!
