Is the Obama campaign really "giving them enough rope"
before they tighten the noose?

It's feeling like a chess game... they've given up a couple of pieces over the past week, but you can tell there is some real strategy at work, and the endgame is building.

2. I suspect/hope that is true
And have shared similar thoughts with the wife tonight, who nonetheless is in the grip of the dreaded "we're gonna be stuck with the Rethuglicans again" variety of despair.

The politics game is really more like backgammon, which blends strategy and chance ... and sometimes you have to know when to push the dice and get aggressive. It seems to me that Palin has run off at the mouth and invented all the cool stories about herself she can ... she is not THAT creative ... so it might be time to lower to truth boom.

4. I'd like to believe so...
...but I remember that everyone here was taking about the "masterful chess game" that Kerry was playing in 2004 that amounted to ratcheting up the niceties towards Bush.
