In Close Contests, poor Democratic morale was Enough to Swing the Election

A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true.

Although examples of such prophecies can be found in literature as far back as ancient Greece and ancient India, it is 20th-century sociologist Robert K. Merton who is credited with coining the expression "self-fulfilling prophecy" and formalizing its structure and consequences. In his book Social Theory and Social Structure, Merton gives as a feature of the self-fulfilling prophecy:

“ The self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behaviour which makes the original false conception come 'true'. This specious validity of the self-fulfilling prophecy perpetuates a reign of error. For the prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof that he was right from the very beginning.”

In other words, a prophecy declared as truth when it is actually false may sufficiently influence people, either through fear or logical confusion, so that their reactions ultimately fulfill the once-false prophecy.

So all of the Chicken Littles out there........just keep on complaining, and all of your dreams may come true....BUT FIRST, read stuff:

IN THE END, WINNING THIS ELECTION WILL BE UP TO US.

This is what Barack Obama has contented all along. That we are who we have been waiting for. Sitting passively and publicly critiquing the campaign (which is all that you are doing when crying on these boards) is not going to win the election. Winning won't depend on how many of us "predicted" a win or a lose. Rewards will not be given to those who claimed beforehand that the campaign strategy was all wrong. You will get nothing for buckling under a tide of manipulative polling and media reports skewed to report an election narrative that they were praying you would buy.

IN THE END, WINNING THIS ELECTION will be based on our attitude and our enthusiasm; on whether we believe that we are going to win or not. The more we say we are not going to win, the more likely that this is what will happen.

SO since we are part of the activist base of the Democratic party, if we act and speak as if we are demoralized, then we become one more loose chink in the armor of this election. and so in fact, we become the problem simply by deciding that telling everyone what's wrong is the priority in this election.

Got a problem with the campaign? Write to them. http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/contact /

For those of you who believe you have a legitimate concern......certainly you have every right to proclaim publicly all you want what you think is wrong with the Obama campaign. But you must keep in mind, in doing so, you are actually helping the McCain campaign, not the Obama campaign.

The media is watching, and negative sentiments against the Obama campaign are being noted, and will be magnified, because that is what the media does. So, yes.....the media is looking for people exactly like you; the ones lacking fortitude and confidence, i.e., those who are scared to death based on past election results, that they are willing to spread their defeatist attitudes to weaken those of us with resolve, and worse still, to those who are still trying to decide who they will vote for. You are the ones that they have been waiting for, and you have a choice of giving them what they seek, or telling them to go to hell. In otherwords, you really do control your own future, and possibly the future of the rest of us, including our children.

Added note: As far as racism and those with concerns about it in this election; racism is an idea, a thought, that manifests itself via attitude, then to words and can lead to certain actions. The more we buy into this idea that the media has sold us that White people are more racists than not, the more we make the issue of racism more real than what it has to be. Please resist. Do not let melanin become the issue in this election.

"In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism, or do we participate in a politics of hope?

Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope: In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation, a belief in things not seen, a belief that there are better days ahead.

I believe that we can give our middle class relief and provide working families with a road to opportunity.

I believe we can provide jobs for the jobless, homes to the homeless, and reclaim young people in cities across America from violence and despair.

I believe that we have a righteous wind at our backs, and that as we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.

America, tonight, if you feel the same energy that I do, if you feel the same urgency that I do, if you feel the same passion that I do, if you feel the same hopefulness that I do, if we do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, from Florida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up in November...."
- Barack Obama

2. Thanks Frenchie for showing eloquently what I have been trying to say so inelegantly
My frustration has been with the panicers and bait cutters at the first sign of work.

They thought it was a cakewalk and its work, DONT PANIC, He and Joe are still the guys.

3. It's always been about us.
Show up in droves and win.

Witty commercials and favorable polls can't do what you control, which is to get that ballot filled out for Obama.

Get out and vote and get everyone you can to do the same.

4. It is easy to become pessimistic
Frenchie, you're from New Orleans, aren't you? I remember when I first started posting here (again after a long absence) I thought you were my friend, Dauphine, who is a NOLA native.

It takes strength to stay positive. Dauphine has always admonished me that I worry too much and that worry paralyses people. She said Obama would win the primaries back when many of us were afraid he wouldn't. She was right and she has told me he will win the Presidency.

But it seems the 'all powerful' media is now trying to tear him and us down. I am afraid of racism and dirty tricks.

I guess we all do what we can. I am spreading info all over the internet.

You have been inspiring me. God bless the FrenchieCat!

Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 03:06 AM by FrenchieCat
Such wonderful smell. France is full of Mimosa you know.

But seriously, Obama will win this thing. You will see.

But if we stop believing in the change we are to bring, than are making it that much harder for ourselves.

Those who panic the most are some of those who care the most, so it is understood why it happens.

I have gotten apprehensive in the past, although I have supported Barack since October of last year, but not anymore. I have seen the two candidates, and their running mates, and Barack/Biden are looking better each and every day.

The man is an Harvard educated Chicago Street Smart Hawaiian chilled laid back kind of a pol. That combination is so unique, that he's the best candidate we've had in years.

Read this article I wrote a time back. Based on what you have stated, I think you'll appreciate it!
Make sure to read the 2nd comment as well. :hi:

10. This is just the after bounce.
Palin so far has managed to repel Jews and many Catholics and women. She is polarizing and will prove more of an anchor around the old man's neck more than anything. The media is just having some fun with us selling the unaware Bushetta. But Obama is a stronger candidate than people are willing to credit him for.

12. I agree with staying positive, confident, and hopeful,
but we must also attempt to have patience and empathy with those who have panic fits. We've put up with this horrific administration for eight frustrating years, and the end date is so nerve-wrackingly close.

29. This election is about ground game.
If we can get enough people out to vote, we can win this. There are more of us than of them, and if we vote, we outnumber them. Not just the backwash 30%, either -- the backwash 30% plus the 20% or so that I consider the "Stockholm Syndrome Voters."

I am becoming more and more convinced that the reason this election looks close is because a substantial percentage of the American electorate has a form of Stockholm Syndrome towards the Republican Party. For those that don't know, it is a psychological disorder wherein a person who has been abused, held hostage, etc., for a very long time, comes to identify with and defend the abusers, even when offered the opportunity for a better life.

What we call "stupidity" is actually that, I think. And if that is what it is, then it is not something we will be able to defeat by messaging or marketing. It's not even defeatable by emotional appeals. It is not a condition that responds to appeals at all, only the passage of time after being forcibly removed from the abuser.

In other words, GOTV is the way this election must be won.

Fortunately, because Obama's people have spent over a year building up a ground game and whipping up enthusiasm among their supporters, we can do it.
