Salon: Obama's Money Troubles
>>Publicly, Obama people remain confident. But, the Times says, "The Obama campaign set a goal in mid-June of raising $300 million for the campaign and about $150 million for the Democratic Party over four-and-a-half months, fund-raisers said. As of the end of July, however, the Obama campaign was well short of the $100 million a month pace it had set, taking in about $77 million between the campaign and the party that month."

The campaign also has the Democratic National Committee holding it back. The DNC's Republican counterpart has been running a successful fundraising operation, and the DNC's effort is lackluster by comparison. As the Times notes, at the end of July the combination of the Obama campaign and the DNC had less cash on hand than the combination of the McCain campaign and the RNC.<<

This is something WE the people can control. Betty and I will be making a donation to the campaign through DU this weekend.

3. $77 million is money problems?
Did they set the bar high on purpose to get people to donate more?

Plus I'd like to see August and Sept numbers especially after the $10 mill they raised in ONE day after Palin's speech.

6. Unfortunately, it takes many millions
to run for President in this country. It should not be that way, but it is, and we have to win.

4. If not now, when?
I had to cut into funds intended for next year, but I gave the max allowable to both Obama and the DNC this year.

The country has more at stake now than in any presidential election since 1932. If we lose this one, we lose the
country, and there is no price that can be put on that. Don't give what you can't, but give what you can.

5. This is the direct consequence of a long and expensive
primary fight.

Many people, in this economy, are simply tapped out.

And the pukes are less so.

8. It's our first donation to the campaign
After the FEMA vote I had decided to donate only to civil liberties organizations or local races.

But the bottom line is, we can't lose this race.

Even if I have to organize bake sales, I will do something for this campaign.

12. Um no, Please move to the next fox hole.
You do realize they are two completely separate spending situations and you cant spend Primary money on the general and vice versa.

13. You do realize that many people only have so much to spend on a political campaign
and may have blown most of it on an extremely hard fought, down to the wire primary - whether on Hilary or Obama.

The danger with Obama's no public financing strategy has always been that he is depending on the money from the very people this administration has driven into the ground the past 8 years.

14. You do realize that the first $2300 of doantions of an individual went to the GENERAL first
and then if they donated over $2300 it went to the primary.

Good luck with the public financing line, ya want to figure out the math on that.

Your worried that he only has 175 million instead of 275 million. If he took public financing you would be compalining hes an idiot because he only has 89 million.

And yes I spelled that comPALINing.

15. I'm not 'compalining' about anything, I'm saying your logic is faulty
I sure as hell don't have $4600 to give in donations, and I'm positive the vast majority of Obama's small donators don't either. General money vs. Primary money has nothing to do with anything, if there is a finite amount of cash out there that could potentially be given to Obama in this campaign, my point was that an extremely large portion of it was blown in the Primaries.

And yes, that's because someone refused to bow out even when reality was staring her in the face. A month earlier and perhaps some of that cookie jar money that was wasted toward the end there is in Obama's account right now.

This is pointed more towards those who said that the long drawn out primary was a 'good' thing. It wasn't, it drew extreme amounts of cash out of potential donar's hands who may not have much more left in thier budget to give.

7. Time to send him some more money, I guess
I was going to hold off but I don't want him to have to pull out of any more states because of lack of money.

9. In addition, the campaign HQs can also use gift cards
Someone at a meeting last night asked "what can you use?" when the Obama coordinator for our area was introduced. "What does HQ need?"

"Offfice equipment, printers, toner, paper - actually, office supply store gift cards would be great" he said. "And food"

Someone on DU mentioned stopping by his local Obama HQ with a case of Red Bull - what a great idea to bring food and beverages!

I am lucky to be well employed right now, so that's something I can do in addition to a check to the campaign.
