ROCK CHALK BARACK
A T-Shirt I spied while on our Escape from Gustav Tour in the Land of Oz last week.

Believe Me, in Kansas that is High Praise.

 We watched the games again this past weekend. I love that intro. It's, indeed, a Kansas thing.

4. Hi Mabus
Had a nice visit last week, spent most of our time in and around Topeka, had dinner at a nice Mexican restaurant near the state capitol, 99 cent Margaritas and we ate out on the patio. Very nice visit compliments of a hurricane.

6. I know you'd rather have been at home
and I can't blame you. I'm glad you had a nice visit. Hopefully, next time, you'll visit on your own schedule and won't have to spend half your time with an ear cocked toward the weather.

I think I know the restaurant you mean. I can't for the life remember the name of it right now but I've eaten there with friends after talking to legislators, protesting and dropping stuff off at the Kansas Supreme Court. It's really convenient and the food is good.

Some friends of mine told me that the university was having some problems with the "Barack, Chalk, Jayhawk" t-shirts. It looks like the t-shirt makers have to "ROCK CHALK BARACK". Good for them.

5. a play on the Rock Chalk chant, Teddy Roosevelt called it the greatest college cheer ever
KU's world famous Rock Chalk Chant evolved from a cheer that a chemistry professor, E.H.S. Bailey, created for the KU science club in 1886. Bailey's version was "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU" repeated three times. The rahs were later replaced by "Rock Chalk," a transposition of chalk rock, the name for the limestone outcropping found on Mount Oread, site of the Lawrence campus.

The cheer became known worldwide. Teddy Roosevelt pronounced it the greatest college chant he'd ever heard. Legend has it that troops used the chant when fighting in the Philippines in 1899, in the Boxer Rebellion in China, and in World War II. At the Olympic games in 1920, the King of Belgium asked for a typical American college yell. The assembled athletes agreed on KU's Rock Chalk and rendered it for His Majesty.
